I found a black on black with a bad engine. Everything else seems to be good. I could get it for about $1000 or a tad under. I'm looking to have my final cost after a new engine be about $5000 including the price of the car.

Does this sound like a good route?

I'm thinking if I went this route I'll know the history of the engine from day 1. Plus I'll know enough to pin the cams from day 1.

So what do you think?

Where can I get a good new or reman engine from?

Are there any known reputable shops in FL that work on SHO's?

Thanks guys.

If you are talking about a brand new SHO motor, keeping that under 5K is probably not possible. Here are some place to get them down your way it you do want to take a look.

That's just for the short block assembly, assuming all of your accessories are good. If you bought a SHO for $1000 with a decent motor in it, there would be enough things to do to spend 5K rather quickly. Not to judge because I haven't seen the car, but if someone managed to destroy the motor and it didn't have 500k miles on it or 20psi of boost, they probably didn't take care of the rest of it like they should have either.

It the body and rest of the car is in great shape, I would say go for it if you have enough money. But if its a fairly worn down car, I don't know that it would pay off for you.

You will be hard pressed to find a ****** motor for the GenIII. I've seen a few on ebay over the years that were affordable but I haven't seen one lately. Dealer price on a new short block is $15k (and that's without heads obviously).
To get a good used long block swapped in there will run you about $5k including the price of the car. At least from nesho, it looks like you could hit that price point and the cams would be welded for you already.

You can get a brand new in the crate 3.4 long block with accessories right now on Shoclub.com classifieds for $3,250 complete as seen in the ad here

New 1996 to 1999 Ford Taurus SHO 3.4 L, 32 valve, V-8 complete engines still in the crate. They have the p/s pump, A/C compressors, flywheel, and wiring harness on them. I was told they were both 1998 models, but I think one of them is a 1997. As you know, they will fit 1996 to 1999 models, but you might have to use your old wiring harness. I have two engines available. (as of 3/29/2009). $3750.00 each, negotiable. (Northern Kentucky) Ford part # F8DZ6007BA

4/12/2009 - PRICE REDUCED - $3350.00
4/18/2009 - PRICE REDUCED - $3250.00

imho, a grand for a gen3 w/ a bad engine is way too much money. I only spent $300 on my black 98 w/ 97k and it has a good engine but trans problems - and trans problems are a lot less expensive than engine problems on those cars.....

I believe it's against forum rules to post a link, but I assure it's on there. Just type in "sho shortblock" and it's the only advert that pops up.
