Just wanted to chime in on the subject of “wheel hop”. I recently installed a tune from Brad AJP. First things first, I couldn’t be happier and more impressed. We’re not done yet and I’m blown away at the results. Going to be working on an e35 tune real soon as well.

That being said, after I installed the first revision of the 93 tune, I experienced SEVERE “wheel hop”. Brad tried to soften the shift and I lowered my wheel pressure. It didn’t help at all. I’ve experienced wheel hop before and this was a little different. Sometimes the tires would squeal while hopping, sometimes they would just chirp but sometimes the hop would be silent, just rattling my brain and the dash.

After researching the subject, I decided to drain and fill my transmission fluid twice. I used motorcraft LV from the local Lincoln dealer.

The “wheel hop”/transmission slip is now completely gone.

The fluid had 65,000 miles on it. It wasn’t burnt, it smelled fine(as far as transmission fluid can smell good) and it was just a little off color.

Changing the transmission fluid should be an absolute, no matter what the situation.

It’s a completely different car now.

Honestly after my tune, I experienced what I thought was wheel hop but it turned out to be (what's better described as) shuddering. Brad (yeah, my tuner too) mentioned hearing about slightly overfilling these trans. When I checked the level, it WAS low. Putting half a quart over fixed it for me.

Completely changing the fluid will my spring time gift to her. :)

Anyone who ever experienced the lockup shudder in a 4R70W tranny knows that the tranny fluid affects a LOT of things. To the OP, if it were me, I might have actually tried putting a small amount of limited-slip diff additive in the tranny just to see what happens.

I had a '96 T-bird 4.6L, and still have my wife's 97 Cougar, and both of them, at almost the exact same elapsed time after manufacture but with totally different mileage, started with the lockup shudder. Switching from Mercon to Mercon V made it go away. One thing I noticed was the smell of the Mercon V - smelled like limited-slip diff additive.

Would be interesting to do a smell test ;)

I believe that by 96, Mercon V was already the standard fill from the factory. Gen 3 SHOs had it. Dunno about the Gen 2 ATX.

Both my '96 T-bird and '97 Cougar developed the standard lockup convertor shudder, and a refill (not even a flush) of Mercon V cured it in both vehicles. I don't remember the timing, but they both did it "X" years after manufacture. I think the Cougar had < 15K miles on it, and the T-bird had 35K or so. The T-bird had even been to the dealer for a tranny flush and fill at 30K I think. And the bill said "MERCON".

But hey, this is WAY off-topic... ;)
