Just asking those who had IPT diffs expode

Was it actually the diff pin launching or was it actually the spider gears breaking up.

if anyone still has a blown one can I have it?

I also have a WTB up for a good IPT diff or phantom grip.. getting a bit creative.

half-way there, I think.
I didn't buy one, but I know the failure mode. The problem is that to install the phantom grip, you have to remove 2 of the side gears, leaving only 2 side gears to transmit 220hp/200tq to the ground. The gears can't handle that power and get ripped to shreds.

And to add to what Terry said,

The gears, stock, suffer from a lack of lubrication. Adding a bunch of spring pressure against the bearing surface without adding any provision for additional lubrication also contributed to their demise.

I do not believe any of the diffs lasted long enough to test the diff pins, as the spider gears were eating themselves around every corner.

Thanks Terry, Have you looked at an exploded IPT diff or is this just something that you heard.

And who gave you this information so perhaps I can see it myself.

You may want to get in touch with forum member SHO-N-GO. He had an IPT unit explode on him. I think he was the first person to actually take the diff upart and see how shotty the whole thing was. He had pictures too. Id do a search.

Do a search. There were some very revealing pics posted in a thread here previously that may be what you're looking for. The proof has been pretty undeniable.

If anybody actually thought that removing 2 of the 4 spider gears was a good idea... think again.

How long do you think 2 of these little gears are going to last? Add the extra load of the PG springs and a lack of positive lubrication, not long.

Also think about making a stock differential better. Find ways of lubrication as will as strengthening the pins. I've talked to a few members on here who have some very interesting ideas for making the stock diff much much better.

I have a blown IPT diff sitting on my shelf here. The reamaining pin decided it did not like the case housing and tried to exit it. The two gears are also pushed into the case in a couple areas.

The whole housing has hairline to moderate cracks in it.

at least one person already has, and right now, he is putting the diff through the paces.

I have a busted one you're more than welcome too, but it's still sitting inside the blown transmission housing attached to my car. That diff ruined my SHO aspirations.

Best of luck,
Dan

Yes you and Fred did do a lot of work to the car, unfortunately due to the diff I was only able to enjoy the rejuevenated auto for about 3000 miles. I actually have another almost-complete tranny (minus 2nd gear) that I purchased from Fred a while back. It just never made it's way out of the trunk and into the drivetrain :( .

Arent there holes in the stock diff to allow fluid to travel through it? And doesnt the SHO diff suffer from lack of lubrication when spinning fast, now what if you took those stock holes and made the diameter of them bigger to allow more fluid in and out, wouldnt that help the diff to stay together?

Well I can get you a second gear and rebuild the tranny. AND install it.

Shame to let the car go to waste.

Im sure that we could talk prices or trades. You have a part im very intersted in if I remember correctly.

kinda OT but, would adding a thicker cage in the center of the diff and drilling it for more roll pins or even bolts that go through the cage and through the inner ends of the pins help any?

Like say this...
