I don't think it would really mess anything up.... might leak fumes into the cabin... and be a little loud but nothing in terms of engine problems.

Now if they were clogged you'd have issues...

I have a 93 and my o2's are ahead of the cats so I didn't NEED to replace the cats when I had a small hole rusted thru but did anyways because I was concerned about lost back pressure and I hated that sound that came w/ the hole. Also I was warned about grit getting in and clogging things up or water and salt getting in and rotting the insides. When I replaced my mufflers a couple of months later they were rattling from debris inside and was told it was probably from my cats rotting and pieces getting blownout and trapped in the stock mufflers... I guess that could cause a restriction and a loss of performance.

Gas mileage will not be affected, especially after you pass out from carbon monoxide fumes filling the passenger cabin.

Fix the cats. Exhaust leaks can be deadly. doh

No kidding. Couple of years ago I was drivin' the Cougar in cold weather so I had the windows up to keep warm. Well, I came home that night with the worst headache I've ever had and it lasted a couple of days before it was totally gone. Don't know if the leaky exhaust was what caused the headache but I didn't drive the car again untill I had a new system. mmmmm, flowmasters on a big block... Music to my ears.
