i guess it sounds obvious, but aside from the stated yr and miles listed, seals and clutch lever mechanics... what should i look for, ie. avoid, when looking at junkyard mtx's?

thanks

yea, both of those would be nice. Mostly the cracked/chipped cases, the big fist sized hole in the case. You can check the fluid by taking the plug out of the bottom to make sure its not all like empty.

100.00 to 200 for the tranny from a junk yard
300 for a rebuild kit
300 - 400 labor to rebuild and ship..you could have a nice tranny for under a grand that will serve you well.

I would try to go to a pick a part junkyard. That way you can see the condition of the car the tranny came from. If its not too hacked up already, you can push in the clutch and change gears. Around my area, pick a part tranny goes for $83 plus $10 core charge. My brother and I got lucky and picked up a Quaife equipped tranny for $93.

You might want to try buying a lottery ticket with your luck.....
I am still jealous that my brother spend $83 for his quaife and I spend $2K for my rebuilt quaifed tranny.

Yeah I found that SHO. Had the following:

Quaife
Konis
Eibachs
Upgraded Endlinks
SHOShop Snorkle
K&N Filter
Probably a Rod Shifter (it was a 90)
Spare Tranny in the Trunk
SHOShop Reinforced front Motor Mount in the trunk
Kevlar Clutch
17lb Flywheel

It also had ring style aluminum subframe bushings too. The engine was stock, but the oil was light gold in color and very little carbon on the valves and in the intake. It was a well loved SHO IMHO.

Then why was it in the junkyard??
No idea. May the owner died and the family junked it. It didn't have any dents other than door dings. The interior was in pretty good condition. It had good tires and slicers. Hey it was our big gain.

 That's unfortunate. I bet that could have made a really nice SHO for someone. But good for you guys I guess! Now, if I could find a modded SHO in my junkyard... Or any SHO at all anymore. We used to have about 6 g1 SHOs... but they turned into smushed metal about a month ago.

It happens. Tom, Shopo and I raided a nice white GenII drivetrain at a local junkyard that didn't appear to have anything wrong with it. Body was very straight, no broken glass, decent interior. It would've been a great car for somebody. When the motor was opened up it had a spun bearing. Rather than fix it, it got junked. It happens.

Maybe there was a divorce or something going on and the car had to be ditched. If the "other" spouse ditched it the recycler is the quickest and easiest way to make it happen if you don't care about the money.

This is why people scour junkyards. Once in a while something really good shows up.

I remember once getting an entire working Jeep 4.0 driveline (engine, tranny, xfercase)with full harness for $350. Thats about the only good deal I ever got at a salvage yard.

I find that hard to believe.......

It's true, it's sitting in GoofSHO's garage. I've seen it with my own 2 eyes. Oh yeah, I got Koni and Eibachs off of the same car for $115. They were in like new condition.
