My buddy bought a 98 M3 motor and trans out of a j/y for $200 b/c the car was tied up in a tow lot while the court case was settled for 4 years. The BMW was mangled so bad that they didn't know what it was, but I spotted the M power shroud on the intake and listed it for sale for my buddy on a BMW forum... he sold everything for $3000 and likely could have got more. There's deals at junkyards, just few and far between. Finding a quaife in a j/y is more likely in CA than elsewhere though IMO :)

a question that I hoped would be answered here:

nearly 2 years on my ring style SFBs and still no problems.

I've had mine a long time as well, with the subframe in and out more times than I'd like (currently out), with no problems. For anyone who's worried about the ring style, just putting a washer between the unibody and bushing takes care of the gap problem.

A ring of silicone around the case indicates that, a) the trans has been taken apart, b) silicone was used to seal it up, and c) silicone is bad for the tiny passages in the shafts.
