I'd say the most important part of the setup is the deck.

I bought an Alpine CDA-9813 a few weeks ago and installed it along with a decent rockford amp and single jl 10 with stock speakers and the difference over stock is amazing.

Try a deck upgrade first and foremost...then go from there...

Exactly. Start with a good deck. I am an avid Pioneer fan and will tell you to purchase one of their units. If you aren't satisfied, simply go to the next step of adding speakers while upgrading your wiring, then add amps if the power/clarity still isn't what you're looking for. You can fit 6 1/2" in your doors while 5x7" is your stock rear speaker size. Components are obviously the best way to go, but at that point you're talking about purchasing an amp for them as well.

Having owned both, I would recommend an Alpine over a Pioneer. I currently have a Pioneer and the Alpines I've had always have better sound quality than Pioneers.

IMO.

I'm a Pioneer sackrider too

Anyway, when I had the '93, I had my Pioneer deck with stock speakers and an aftermarket 8" sub (which happened to be a Jensen cheapie) and it sounded great. Of all the vehicles I've owned, that was the best setup; it was lightyears ahead of stock sound. The stock JBL system wasn't and isn't a terrible setup, though. In it's day, it was quite nice.

As an aside, I'm driving around in my beater now, which has stock AM/FM Cassette HU and stock speakers. It's like driving around with an alarm clock in the passenger seat frown

Thanks for the replies.I have a high end(for it's time) alpine head.Forget the model but it has no internal amp.I am running Rockford amps for mids/highs/sub.I even have an Alpine Eg,erg-180 I think.I'm messing up somewhere as it sounds fairly bad up at high volume.I think it may be the blaupunkt speakers I have(see sig)Should I spend the money for componets up front and fab some componets in the rear? What should I get?I'm thinking the Infinity,or somePolk audio. Thanks for the help guys!

IMO the most important part of a car stereo system is the speakers since they are the part that actually reproduces the sound. If you are looking for sound quality, spend your money on a decent set of component speakers and an amp for the front stage. Don't worry too much about rear speakers as they aren't that important.

Also some good wire and RCA's cant **** you, a crossover and/or equalizer most defitnaly wont hurt.

At first I had stock seprates in my SHO and with my bass blockers, crossover, and 14band digtial EQ the sound they produced was crystal clear(well for old *** speakers they made clear sound :) ) as if I had replaced them, all of my bass came from my 2 12" JL Audio W3 D4's in a custom box, of course with the 1999 series discontinued Orions 225HCCA & 250HCCA.
