Well im 18 years old, and im having a few minor problems with my automatic tranny. It only has 66,000 miles on it and it will stutter between first and 2nd gears. On cold mornings the tranny runs precisely, but when giving it a little more then usual gas on warm days it will stutter. With pedal to the floor the tranny will slam and bang into 2nd, and jolts the car. Also between 1st and 2nd shifting the CEL will come on. But here's the real situation...My dad will take it for test drives and the tranny will be fine and CEL will not come on. Yet he just thinks im full of BS, and thinks i dont like the car anymore. When in reality i know the tranny will get worse and just want to ditch it now before it gets worse and buy a 95 MTX. Is there anyway a tranny expert can look @ it or run tests to see what is wrong?

Thanks,
Scott

Check the tranny fluid. It should be between between the two holes on the dipstick when you check it hot and it should be a redish color. You mentioned the CE light goes on. Have you checked for the codes? Let us know what you find....

I did check the tranny fluid when hot, and it was red like you had said. Also i ran codes and came up with a 617 of transmission shift failure 1/2. It doesnt look too good for me.

Have you tried taking it for a drive with your father in the passenger's seat to demonstrate the problem?

Are you sure you're not imagining it???

The 617 DTC would indeed indicate a problem. It might be electronic, which would be far cheaper to fix than a rebuild. Take it to a Ford dealer or a tranny shop for a free diagnosis with a written estimate for repairs.

Here's the 617 routine from the PC/ED:

DTCs 49/617 indicate an improper 1-2 shift.

Possible causes:

Intermittent harness continuity.
Damaged Manual Lever Position (MLP) Sensor.
Damaged shift solenoid.
Worn friction elements.
