i think 3950-4000rpm.

cool, thanx.
im use to my gen3 duratecs 3500 but my dad drives his 90 sho and he seems to shift right after 3500. And I had to ask him why hes letting the rpms go so high before he shifts. I was thinking he was reving it so high that the secondiers were opneing up in every gear he goes through, and this is how he daily drives it.
So I was and kinda still am worrrries that hes reving it higher than need be.

What are your guys rpms when shifting through 1-2-3. I tend to look out of the corner of ym eye and see his is usualy between 3500-4000 :nut:

Perhaps Im to use to my auto tranny where it shifts at 1500-2000 durning normal driving.

I don't shift BEFORE 3000rpms unless the car is cold and i shift right at or just below it. Otherwise its 3500-7000 rpm shifts all day, depending how i'm feeling. I like to 'skip' a gear or two most times. Like I'll do the 1-2 and then go to 4th at like 40mph to cruise in the city at 2000rpms.

They open at 3850. And I shift whenever I feel like it. It's not going to hurt anything to let the revs climb (other than gas mileage). On the other hand, driving around with the engine at low revs all the time will **** your rod bearings. In general, I try to time my shifts so the engine is at 2000 rpm minimum once I engage the next gear. I usually only keep it this low when it's cold though.

If I'm cruising, I'll shift at 3500 or so.

If I'm having fun, I'll shift so that the next gear engages at 3500.

Yeah, I was just thinking about that and edited my above post. I keep the revs down while the engine's cold, but the shift points usually rise once everything's warmed up.

When cruising to work, I shift at 2500 or so. And when traffic is looking like its going to move at its 45-50 mph pace, I'll skip from 3rd to 5th, and cruise.

I must be killing my rod bearings. I tend to shift at 2000 RPM's. When I drive in city I tend to shift what the Ford owners manual suggests:
First to Second: 17mph
Second to Third: 27mph
Third to Fourth: 35mph
Fourth to Fifth: 44mph
And even with shifting at these speeds. I feel like I am lugging the engine

Well, with the way my trans was, I had to start in second, so I was in second up until about 25 to 30, then third from there to about 40, then skip to fifth.

Saying "Shifting too low will **** your rod bearings" is, IMO, painting an incomplete picture.

Lugging the engine (high throttle openings and high load at low RPMs) can contribute to rod bearing wear and failure. Non-spirited driving (eg. 1/4 throttle) at low RPMs is perfectly fine.

If you're driving the car leisurely, you can shift at 2000 RPMs if you want, and you won't be damaging anything.

The real problem is not downshifting from the top gears when accelerating from cruising speed.

Example: Say you're cruising at 50 MPH in 5th gear, so the RPMs are right about 1800 RPM (assuming stock tire size), and you decide to accelerate, so you mash open the throttle and accelerate (slowly) to 70 without downshifting. This is lugging the engine, because you're pushing the engine hard at low RPMs in a high gear. By the time you get to 70 MPH you will have hammered the ever-loving shit out of your rod bearings, and that's bad.

But when accelerating in a lower gear, upshifting early won't necessarily hurt anything by itself.

Thank you for this info. I'm still in my first year of driving my first manual ever and I am the guy in your example. I shall change my ways. :)

Refer to Jon Heese's post above, it's an excellent description and example. And keep in mind, the owner's manual recommendations are most likely for maximum fuel economy.

The stock secondary opening is 3950 RPM.
SHO tach's aren't the most accurate, so it may read slightly higher or lower.

My daily driver I shift around 3000 rpm.
My heavily modded Green plus I shift around 3800 rpm.
