What mufflers should I get?

What size is the pipe factory? I already thought it was 2 1/4 or so... thus the reasoning for 2 1/4 mufflers... I guess the 3rd cat and resonator might be bigger but it necks back down to about 2 1/4 it seems like. Just thinking here :type:

The factory pipe is actually around 1 3/8". ..It is ridiculous how small the opening was at the entrance to the muffler

The exhaust is 2.25" after the cat ******. And the OEM mufflers are SLO muffs. Really necks down just before them, tips too are around 1.5"

Actually the pipes are adequate for the car. I have 2.5" mufflers and without the tips it's pretty loud.

Well, is new piping from the first two cats back to the mufflers worth it? I guess that's the question I should be asking.

Not unless it needs replaced.

Biggest problem I have is that the mufflers were not welded on with SS rod or wire. Both mufflers and both tips have rusted off and needed to be welded back up again.

The OEM pipe that comes back from the cat ****** is mandrel bent and will last forever.

If you want to open the back end up I would cut the pipes off ahead of the mufflers and weld in some good ss pipe with the mufflers of your choice.

So the key is to replace the pipe out back before the mufflers where it's been necked down then? I've been underneath it and noticed how it gets squeezed down for the mufflers. Stupid I think.

I have worked at a place that has a welder with SS wire. This is the place where I was going to replace the mufflers anyway so I've got that figured out.

Paul what do you suggest for tips then if they are necked down to about 1 1/2 on the OEM ones. I've seen the ones that Don sells, I think. Very nice but still alot of money for me. Just some oval ones or did you modify your factory tips?

I know I'm not Paul, but I just had the shop open up the tips. If you want I can snap a picture,

You can cut the tips back to get the opening you want and weld on a short connector pipe.

I have a set of tips with 2" 316 grade SS pipe welded to them.

I've got the flowmaster 40's. Sounds perfectly fine too. Am trying to get the 3rd cat removed. Here is a pic of them!
That was the day I get it done! Almost a year now!

I like the sound of Flowmasters but they aren't stainless in the generic 40 series. The Borlas are, and are about the same price.
