what is this thing?!

i know this will probally sound stupid to you guys(and girls)but on my 89 mtx there is a manual(ie not electronic) button right behind my ignition. it can only be pushed in when the car is off and pops back out when the car is started. please somone tell me what im looking at.

It is the column lock. It locks the wheel to keep it from turning when the keys are out of the vehicle. Take them out and try turning the wheel. It will click, and then the wheel will be locked in place.
