The acronym PCM is commonly used to refer to the engine computer, or Electronic Engine Control Module. However this is not quite a correct reference. The acronym is for Powertrain Control Module and from about 1990 until about 1992 Ford used it to refer to the Module as PCM only if it controlled both engine and transaxel. Beginning in 1993 , PCM means all engine control modules.
Very briefly, and simply, the PCM maintains a fuel air ratio of 14.1 to 1 using the information supplied by the various sensors. While it does much more than that, the bottom line is to provide fuel economy and minimize pollution. rangerj
