Just as the title states, what is the best way to remove the tranny? Do I have to pull the motor, and all?

OK this is how i did mine. i just dropped mine with the motor all as one piece i used a lift and dropped the subframe and the engine tranny as one, onto a table that i could roll around. i would go inside before gettin it on the lift and pull off the knuckle that goes to your p/s rack leave the steering rack attached to the subframe when u drop it. take your altenator off and set it aside unbolt the a/c compressor and tie it to the side, take your coolant res. off and undoo the power steering lines from the res. also. Disconnect the fuel lines, clutch, throttle and cruise control cables. Then i would take the wheels off pull your axle nuts off, disconect the sway bar endlinks and your lower torsion bars. go through and disconnect all the wires that lead to the tranny engine and you power steering rack. Then get u somethin to set the subframe on (thats if you have a lift). Slide it under the car, let the car down ontop of the table, unbolt the 4 main subframe mounts. now lift the car slowly up stopping periodically to check and see if you missed any wires i acually unpugged the 4 behind the intake once i got the car off the motor a few inches. once all is clear pull it out from under the car and split your motor and tranny in 2. well there yah have it!!! good luck thumbs_u

No you don't have to pull the motor to remove the Tranny. You do have to support the motor because removing the subframe is mandatory.

Support the motor with a home made sling made of 2x4s or use an engine hoist. I believe there are directions for the sling on www.shotimes.com somewhere.

The rest is pretty straight forward if you have a book.

Step 1:
Light off thermonuclear device.

Step 2:
Oh, wait... oops.

I have been told of a Gen 1 that had the trans removed through the top without removing the engine.

Removing the subframe, engine & trans right out the bottom is one way. Suspending the engine & removing the subframe & trans is probably the most common way. Removing the engine & tranny out the top is another possibility. It's not exactly fun pulling a trans without a lift, regardless or method.

best of luck, Matt.

How hard would it be to pull them both out from the top? Is there enough room? seems to me that some accessories would have to come off the motor...

I'm of the philosophy that if you don't have to pull the motor, don't pull the motor. Why deal with A/C and P/S lines, plus all the coolant, electrical and other connections if you don't have to?

While it's not the easiest thing to drop the tranny out, it's easier than taking out the engine & tranny.

Just an F Y I,,, the guy's that are REAL good at it,,like Doug at Performance Plus,,can drop a tranny, swap the clutch, and have it all back together in 2 1/2 hours. He suspends the engine and drops the subframe, then the tranny. the trick is to be able to lower the engine a bit while it's suspended from the engine bay cradle. Me, maybe 2 and a half days if I'm in the right mood. Good luck.

They will both come out the top with no accessories removed.

seriously, just drop the tranny. I can do a clutch in about 4 hours now, and that's including me grinding the flywheel down.
