Well...today's problem.

Get in car to go to ford dealer. Had to pick up a tie rod for a friend while he was at work. Come home. Go to leave 10 minutes later for a haircut appt. car starts, but runs REAL rough. Give it a little gas. About 30 seconds later clears up. Figured it was just low fuel, so I go fill up. When I took the cap off, A LOT of pressure was released in the tank. I fill up and started her up again, all is good.

Go get haircut, come out and it's fine. Go to get car washed. Upon finishing the car wash (30 mins),I go to start up, and again idles really rough. Give it gas and 30 seconds and it smooths out. Come back to my apartment. I figured maybe it was clogged fuel injectors so I threw some cleaner into the fresh tank of gas. Upon openin the fuel cap though once again alot of vapor came out, more than ever before.

What is going on with my fuel system??? When the car is running, i hear a high pitched whine from the rear of the car. Is this my fuel pump ready to bite the dust? I have an extended warranty so I don't really care what's gotta be fixed..

, but I don't want to get stranded somewhere....

I'd have to go with Fred on this one. Stop by pep boys and pick up a purolator fuel filter. It's 9.95 and takes about 10 minutes to install. Jack up the rear of the car, press the shrader valve on the fuel raile to release all the fuel pressure, and just pull the clips off and pull the hoses from either end, then slide it off of the bracket. I did it without jacking, so it can be done... Then again, I'm tiny!

Ok I know where i'm going tomorrow...

Would this in any way cause a knocking sound in the motor???...Another problem that has sprung up.

Seems to be in the #2 cylinder.....man I hate my SHO sometimes....if I wasn't so attached to it...

This all seems to familiar to me, since I'm going through that right now!
I have had a whine coming from the fuel pump for a while, and those that have heard my car are split on whether it needs to be replaced or not. So, I'm going to eventually replace it.
However, I also had my car running rough and have lackluster acceleration, especially after 2000 rpms. At idle, it just idles a little rough, but driving below 2000 it does seem too bad, as the revs start to go up, the car runs rough.
I found it to be my #2 cylinder was problematic by doing a cylinder balance test. Sure enough, check the plug and plug wire and the wire is almost off completely and the plug well is soaked with oil. So, my #2 plug and/or wire are gone. They are currently being replaced, along with the Valve cover gaskets and plug well gaskets.
If you don't have yours figured out by Thursday or Friday, I'll let you know if mine is better!
I also had a light ticking noise coming from the engine which at this point, I will chalk up to that one cylinder piston just going up and down without actually doing anything or having resistence from the combustion it would normally go through.

Well, I changed the fuel filter. It looked like it was still the original filter from when the car rolled off the assy. line in Atlanta. Started it a few times and things seemed to be ok, except for the knocking. I had my buddy rev it from idle to about 3 g's and hold it for a few seconds. When he backed it off the knocking went away. Shut it off, restarted, knock reappears. Took it to 3 grand, backed off and knock disappeared....I'm totally lost as to what it is. I checked the connections on the plug wires, they all seem fine. I couldn't check the well without takin off the manifold, but I just had the well gaskets replaced not more than 10 k ago, so I doubt there is any oil in there.....

Any Ideas?

Mine does the same exact thing! But, I think it is the IAB valve. I am going to take it out to clean it next week.

A few things: This one will sound weird, but it happened to my neighbor's ATX SHO. A spark plug had actually come loose, and it was allowing cylinder pressure to vent through the middle front cylinder. A little pressure on the plug wire, and it went away. Strange. Unlikely, too, but easy to check.

What's the knocking noise sound like specifically? What's the frequency? (Engine RPM, 2* engine RPM, random..) Are you sure it's from the motor and not from say, the clutch?

I had a knocking. It was the rod bearings. Took care of that and I have another knocking - the crank pulley for the timing belt. Another weekend project...

The knock is pretty close to engine rpm,...it's not really fast at idle, but apparent, and will increase with rpms. It definitely sounds like it's the number 2 cylinder, which makes it a PITA to work on while i'm at school.

Still lookin for how to run a cylinder balance test....

I've heard engine's knock before, this isn't as loud as most that i've heard. There definitely is something not right though, as my motor never made this noise. I have 88k on her now and the 60k hasn't been done yet due to lack of funds and time. Could it be that a shim is just out of spec???

Thanks again for everyone tryin to help me

A valve will tick, but if the motor is knocking, something is amiss. FYI, my rod knock was very quiet, but I could hear it.

To run the cylinder balance test, go to www.shotimes.com and follow the instructions that are on that page (or linked from it).

How did you determine it's from the #2 cylinder?

Guess third time is the charm sometimes....

Ok just ran the codes...
KOEO Test
111
smile.gif

KOER Test
First time it ran it gave me 538,536, and 521.
Cylinder balance test 9
Second time it ran it gave me 111.
Cylinder balance test 9.

It would appear my engine is ok? yet it doesn't explain the noise i hear....
