Ok, I have three sho's. an 89, and two 95's on is an atx and the other is a mtx.
My 89 even in the desert heat and being driven hard never gets above half way on the gauge.

My 95 mtx had a problem with not warming up in the winter and getting very hot in the summer, I found that the thermostat (original ford part) had disintegrated literally. After replacing it with a stock unit and replacing the radiator due to some leaks and seepage around the tanks, car seems to run more normal, but on a hot desert day with the a/c on it will still get up to the higher end of the normal range, around O/R. before it would get up to the N.

My 95 atx, I have only had it a short time. Found that it has underdrive pullys. Car doesn't have trouble warming up in the winter, but is getting way to the top of the normal band. Radiator looks good, fans look new, I replaced the thermostat to be safe, and yet today it was getting almost to the top of the normal band. what should I be looking for as a normal reading. Only seems to do this above about 90 outside. it was about 100-102 when i was driving today.

both my 95's the gauge will instantly drop a letter when the a/c is turned off, like the electrical load in the car affects the reading.

So what should I be expecting to see as a reading, and what can I do to get the atx to run cooler. yes I know factory guages aren't super accurate, but still.

During our 100 degree weather here, I have been staying exactly at the halfway mark. That's sitting in traffic at stop lights etc..... But that is also with the a/c off as my a/c is broken.

MEASURE the temperature of the system at the coolant outlet with an IR thermometer. Over the years, I've seen a lot of guys here obsess over the gauge indication without ever KNOWING what the actual temperature is.

Typical operating range should be between 195 and 220 F, depending on operating conditions. Generally, as long as the gauge indicates in the "NORMAL" range, the temperature is NORMAL.

grabbed an IF thermometer, and when I got home today with an ambiant temp of 100-102, the gauge was reading around the N/O and the upper hose at the thermostat outlet was 202-205 and lower hose out from the radiator was 185 or so. So I am guessing these are ok numbers.
