Ok guys i went and looked at a 97 today and its got a tick, the guy swares up and down that it has had the cams welded. He says he had taken it to 3 different places and they all said its the chain tensioner, or guide. I drove the car and it runs great. Do you guys think hes full of it or does what he said make any sence. He also said he's drivin it 1000 miles since the engine swap and its not getting any worst?

The noise doesn't get any louder with the rev's, but is coming from the front side of the engine. (passenger side)

I dont want to buy a car that is going to explode.

:thankyou:

I'd wouldn't let someone take the front cover off of a car I was trying to sell. I would sell it to you and guarantee your money back if you got it home and then found out it was not welded.

He says he put all new injectors in it, and he tore it down and says its not the cams. He seems to be stuck on the chain tensioner or guide, which it does sound kind of like the chain slapping. Man its a nice car i may ask if **** do that idea and give money back if it is the cams.

He says the engine only has 60k on it and he says if you scope it the noise is loudest on the p/s pump

I have to say- Paul has the best argument- money back if not welded.

After my luck with unwelded Gen III's if they don't have documentation and pics, I don't believe them anymore. If you have a Gen III and you had it welded, you will have paperwork, pics, and proof. If he doesn't, it's not welded.

Besides- who swaps an engine only to sell it (which is sounds like he did, probably got the car for next to nothing, dropped in an engine he found) and goes through the extra expense on top of everything else- to weld the cams?

If it's a junkyard engine, they're notorious for saying "it's got 60,000 on her" (or 80k) and all of it adds up in this story.

Any clicking noise on a Gen III I would not buy unless I have proof, to my eyes. He has to understand why- if not, find another car, there are more around.

The guy says he was putting it together to drive but he recently went in for shoulder surgery and can no longer work on it, because he cant move his arm. The guy seems like a very stand up guy, and has showed the other problems the car has. His wife is making him sell it.

If you don't know the guy- honestly- people come up with incredible stories to sell cars especially in today's market.

Like SuperHO said- Talking about this car: It was "minor repair needed, and a good investment for someone..." You know, the kid on the way, wife says sell, need a bigger car... Right.

I emailed him back and asked if he sold it yet, cause I saw it there last week and was curious what he's bargain basement it for now that he knows it's *****'d, and he said "now that I've been driving it every day, it seems to be running better, and the price will go up substantially if it gets running much better..." Huh?!? (Yes, it's still parked in the same spot)

Well you could take it to a professional mechanic and have them look the car over. But who knows how ham ****** you are at taking the car apart? A broken valve cover bolt of drop spacer ring from the appearance cover are things to worry about. The mechanic would be liable for any damages done.

I suppose the tick could be an exhaust leak or a valve that needs adjusted.

Run!!!!!!! Run far away fast! That car sounds like shit.

Doesnt really sound like a tick though. Just sounds kinda like is misfireing really bad, or has a huge vac leak.

That video's not of the car he's looking at. It's of a car that I looked at. There's a thread around here somewhere about it....that quickly got off track and wandered into the fried sandwhich arena...
