LOL. I too have a '98, and so far as I can tell, it is just plain old black also. :)

Though I have not checked, I suspect all of the various names representing black are pretty much the same color except for marketting.

Yep, TG is missing...

I selected "charcoal grey" which the color is really called "medium graphite" but I won't go into that here.

Wife's car is a Tropical Green, that would make two of them. Kinda nice owning two of the more rare colors. Now if I could just add an elusive Rose mist to our stable....

Check this out. I done this back on 2-15-04 from the people that was on the V8 mailing list that responded. I took all the responces from the members for about week or a little more before the 15th and then put it together. Some people on here may remember. :thumb: Anyway the years should be right over top of where the #'s and x's are to indicate the years in order. But copying and pasting got it messed up. But I'm sure you will understand it. Just remember these are all Gen III's :salute:

I think the blacks were actually different because my '97 "Black Satin Clearcoat" has a metallic look to it.

I believe you are right and I agree with you on how it looks. If there was no difference, then Ford would never have changed the name. :D

For one thing, there is no Black Satin. It's just Black Clearcoat which is what your "98" is. Now the Ebony Satin Clearcoat is as Funmart6 described it. It has a metalic look to it. I know he said Black Satin Clearcoat, but it is Ebony. Yours being just Black Clearcoat, it is just plain black when you look at it. Look at my post futher up for the colors. You will see the Ebony was offered in "96"-"97" and Black in "98"-"99". ;)

Never thought a freakin' color would be so hard to identify. According to the '97 sales brochure, which can be found at V8SHO.com, the color "Ebony Satin" was not offered in 1997, however, "Black Satin Clearcoat Metallic" was. Check out the post from "FAST4SHO" on page one of this thread.
I guess to be exactly sure what color black we all have, we could check the codes on the vin plate right? :D

:salute: Okay, so my car is a '97 model and is black metallic, so is that "Ebony Satin", or "Black Satin Metallic Clearcoat" (what a long name)? So I guess the '98 and '99 models that are black, are just a solid black and not a metallic black? Must've been a cost cutting move by Ford huh?

I could easily be wrong on this, but it has become my impression that when we strip off all the marketting titles and such, we end up with 2 forms of black used in the Gen III SHOs. Both are clearcoats, since that is pretty much the norm. One has under that a solid black and the other has under it a black with metal flake. I doubt that there is any huge cost differential involved, but suspect that there might have been complaints that the metal flake did not always look 'black', particularly to somewhat older owners, who were more the target market for the Gen III SHO, hence the shift away from it to a more standard solid black.
