Just wondering what is the best out there? thinking of doing a full flush this week end to see if she likes something better.

Best fluid out there would be synthetic ATF (mobil 1, etc), but you are going to pay (like $5 per quart). El cheapo organic (Mercon III Dexron) works too, my 150K original 94 ATX was run with it throughout its entire life and its still going strong despite the new owners' abusive driving tendancies.

Nah, doesnt work that way. Interesting thought though!

I dump a gallon of ATF every oil change (7,500 miles or so) and replace it with SuperTech ATF. It's cheap (yeah it's dino) but it keeps the fluid fresh and it's easy. If (read: WHEN) I get it rebuilt I may use synthetic - but for now SuperTech works well.

I think the best is Amsoil Universal fluid. It has served me well in my '97. Not easy to get though. Wal-Mart has a synthetic ATX fluid for under $4 a quart.

In any case if you use dino fluid cut the change interval in half from OEM spec.

I agree with Paul on this one. IMO, you can't go wrong with an Amsoil or Mobil 1 synthetic fluid change every 30k.

On the same note, I would not recommend Redline D4 (or their other ATF offerings) to anyone with an ATX and a lead foot. ;)

Nothing personal to speak of, really - just a general dislike of the product based the (bad) experiences of other people. This isn't to say that Redline cannot manufacture or that they do not offer a good ATF product, though; rather, I would recommend that someone look elsewhere for a "quality" fluid when switching over to synthetic ATF.

Of course, this is just IMHO ... I'm sure there will be some here who can and will testify otherwise. :)

Well, if I were to switch to Mobil 1 or Amsoil, is their any negative affects to the tranny..after running it awhile with conventiona. I don't want it to start slipping cuz i switched. Does that happen?

Thanx, Doug

Usually when a new problem surfaces after a tranny fluid change (especially when switching over to a synthetic), it's more likely to occur (and often does occur) on an aged factory tranny with lots of mileage to it's credit. Considering the fact that your tranny is both a rebuild and is still relatively young with only 23k miles on the clock (and fluid, I presume), I wouldn't at all worry about switching over. If anything, you'll be doing yourself a favor by getting the old fluid out of there before it has had a chance to form any kind of carbon deposits, varnishes or other nasties on the clutch plates, seals and other vital internal parts.

A good synthetic ATF should not hurt even the old 100K+ trannys. However, due to the better viscosity and cleaning agents the synthetics pull more "crud" out of the mechanical parts, thus causing the "crud" to collect more quickly. If you have an old ATX and want to switch to synthetic go for it. But you should run it for about 3-5K and then change the fluid and filter again. After that you will be good for 30-50K depending on driving habits.

This also is true for engine oil. If you want to switch to synthetic, do an oil and filter change to synthetic run it for 1K and change it again. Two changes at 1K intervals and then your good for 3-5K again depending on driving habits.

GL all,

Well, the fluid has already been changed...at 20k, with the filter (and I installed a drain plug so I can drain it more often and change the filter every 2 drains). So, it isn't the old stuff. Ok, well maybe I will start shopping for some syn.
