Anyone got any PTU nightmare stories or photos. I officially have exploded one under 20k miles on it. Fluid had been changed 3 times in the 20k miles and on my way home I launched off the line and it looks like a grenade went off under the car. I’m working on taking it out now but here is some photos I have right now. This is the first one I’ve ever seen or heard of failing like this. Last ones just got to hot and boiled fluids in PTU and pushed out breather and seals. This one took a new approach lol

Ya know.... The PTU is the only drivetrain component in my single turbo build that held up to the power. Every other component needed rebuilt or replaced.

Jordan_R you have a incredible car! What's your secret or your recommendations on why your PTU lasted with so much power?

I know you did regular fluid changes for sure. My 2013 MKS ECO is stock at 120K miles and I am on the OEM PTU with zero problems.

I'm a firm believer in the extra metal from the cooler on the PP ptu increasing the strength of the case. My non PP car was twisting the case and self machining internally.

I’m on my 3rd one I don’t know if it’s bad luck or what. This one lasted 20k miles before it exploded on a hard launch. I do however have a theory. I have discovered I have a slightly bent wheel. The wheel being bent in the back causes slight bounce or vibration in the steering wheel at 50-80 mph which is the avg speed i travel daily. My assumption is it is following its way down drive shaft causing it to move ever so slightly. The end connected to the PTU started to grind into the housing over the 20k mile spans of time. Toward the end of its life it had wore a good groove into PTU housing at the output shaft side and would hum ever so slightly. I think it was causing the actual case to get hotter than the blazes of ****. Once it was hot it took one good launch and broke away from the case. Now I have custom built one and hopefully it resolves the PTU issue for a good while but in its explosion it broke rear drive shaft and I’m afraid did some damage to the transmission due to the spines that go directly into the transmission. All my fluid emptied out upon breaking. Could just be the seal for PTU or could be the transmission it self was damaged. I have ordered new rim, rear and front LSD’s and a GH torque converter in the works. I found out raybestos is going out of business so finding the clutch pack has almost proven impossible. So I may bite the bullet and order the helix auto sports ones but my wife won’t be to happy about that lol
