Weird tranny problem

When my 91 MTX is cold or first start it in the morning the shifter stick is very stiff. I have to put a lot of effort in getting it in first, second, third, etc. I will grind in reverse. Once the car has been driven a while or warms up the car shifts into gears as easy as silk including reverse. The bushings in the rod shifter are new. Clutch is less than 500 miles old. Just started a couple of days ago. What could be causing this?

I'm not sure what causes a stiff shifter, but I do know that my reverse gear ALWAYS grinds. To avoid this, I've always shifted to a forward gear, and then moved to reverse, without letting off the clutch. Then it engages pretty smoothly.

I'm not an MTX guy but how about trying a fluid change?

i have a 93 mtx and had the same problem..... change the trans fluid

in the 93 mtx im driving now while i wait for a tranny for my 93atx, sometimes first will grind, just gotta go like half in second then into first n its fine, just hot n cold temps with fluid i guess

I changed the fluid today with Mobile 1 ATF and installed a drain plug. It seems to have the same symptoms when cold, the shifter stick is very stiff(Post #1). The old fluid looked nice and pink in the light, but did have a very very faint white murky substance. Metal? Maybe my bucket to catch the oil was dirty or the way the light hit the fluid (just bothered me).

This works some of the time with me.....
