Hi,

there is a weird noise coming from my 1990 taurus. it is a noise similar to a bearing going in a alternator or something. at least thats what my mechanic friend thought it was. he told me to get a stethoscope and probe the alternator and the water pump. Well i did that and couldn't hear the noise anywhere. I finally started hearing the noise on the intake manifold right on the right side a little bit. i got to the crosstube and heard it even louder and then went to the timing cover. I assumption now is that its "crank cancer"

although I can't be certain is there some other condition someone knows about that this could be?? the car has 110,000 and the 60k supposedly! was done at around 80k by a "mechanic" so it definately fits the trend. also if it is this condition what should I do i think the guy said he cut a feeler gauge into 3 peices cramed them next to the key and used loctite(green?) anyone else do the same or something different.

thanks a lot guys.

Is the noise near the lower timing cover? I have also seen where the alignment washer was not installed and the timing belt started carving slots into the timing cover. Best bet to troubleshoot is to take the front end apart and take a look.

do you think no matter what if i put the probe of the stethoscope on the timing belt cover the problem is definately in the front of the engine (timing belt, timing sprockets, crank sproket)I was thinking of doing the front 60 k anyway since I don't beleive the previous owners brother did the 60k well at all. my mechanic friend of mine pointed out the the plug wires were factory because there were numbers on them I think technically if you do a "60k" you include new wires. I don't know if the spark plugs were replaced. also I haven't noticed any decrease in power. The engine is just as powerful as it always is ;)

I would take it apart myself and find out the problem, if it were mine.

PLEASE use punctuation in your posts!! I had a hard time following your post.

It is easy to take off the top timing cover and and see if you can find anything unusual. I developed a click similar to this on my 93 ATX and it turned out to be the timing belt tensioner going bad.
