Depends, is the pulley just loose? If it isn't just loose, but the bearings are getting fubared...then yes. The front half has to be replaced. The cheapest source for this is the A1 Cardone pump from www.rockauto.com....3 year 36k mile warranty.....for around $50.

Have fun with that.

I'm just guessing at what it could be. I need to get a stethoscope down there and check it out. But my ongoing whine has become a high pitch squeak.

I know its a lot of work but I owuld replace the whole thing, the last thing you want is a bad water pump in the middle of the night.but then again I wouldnt want to the the water pump on these cars at all, so save up your money if your not a DIYer. Good luck, but yeah check the pulley first...let us know

I'd run the motor a bit (short bit of course) without the serp. belt - so you can isolate if it is a serp. belt problem or a timing belt pulley problem.

Ok, I'll do that later. I went out and just ran the motor for a minute and it really does sound like it's coming from the waterpump. I'll do your suggestion later tho Doug.

Took it off this morning, and ran the engine for about a minute. Dead silence. Put it back on "chirp chirp chirp."

Well, you now know for sure that it is something that the belt touches. Does the belt turn anything else?

PS pump has been replaced, both idler pulley bearings have been replaced, and when the serp belt was off, nothing made noise so the crank pulley bearing (if there is one) is fine. The noise is coming from the center of the area, so I think the alt and a/c compressor are fine.

Ok, all 3 idler including tensioner bearings have been replaced. Car is starting to warm up more than usual and the fan is working extra hard. I don't think I'll be driving to work tomorrow.

Yep, it looks a bit different. No need for the washer anymore. I'm going to pick one up for the tensioner as well. That one is whining a bit.
