Hey I'm wondering what are the signs of a failing water pump. Currently my car drips a small amount of water and at idle there's a wobbling sound. Is it as obvious as it seems?

Just let me know if this is infact a water pump on its way out. Where's the best place to get a H20 pump for a good price? Thanks!

Water pumps usually fail by leaking at the shaft seals. This trickle of water comes out of the lower timing belt cover below the crankshaft damper. The water pumps can also fail their bearings, but rarely do they do this. The timing belt should be removed to replace the pump to prevent getting coolant on the belt. I recommend the rebuilt Motorcraft pumps through A1 Cardone for less than $70 with a lifetime warranty. They replace the seals and bearings and refininsh the case. It includes the front case half with the shaft, impeller, seals, bearings and new gasket.

Scott, I just checked on Action Auto's homepage and there's the A1 Cardone rebuilt for $54 $10 core charge. Is this for real? Are all A1 Cardone Water Pumps backed by a lifetime warranty?

Additionally, what kind of labor costs am I looking at? There's a possibility I could have my uncle come up from maryland to help me out (he recently replaced the water pump on his '94 mtx) Said it was a **** of a job. Any idea what I would have to pay if I went the retail route? Thanks for your help.

To replace the water pump really requires the removal of the timing belt. Have you priced that job lately? I'd say most shops that knew what they were in for would charge at least a few hundred dollars for labor. It's no less than a 4 hour job, more like 6.

Hey Scott,
I Have to replace my water pump, but the timing belt has been changed all ready. do you really have to take off the belt or is it just easier to take off the belt.

Thanks

When I had to have the WP changed a local mech quoted me 600, so I opted to replace it myself. It took about 7 hours to do the whole thing. All the belts, including timing, have to be removed. This is because the pump is a tight fit plus it has the long metal tube that goes behind the belt and way down to connect to the lower radiator hose - not really any way to wiggle it out with the belt in the way. UNLESS you can take that tube off the pump first, but IMHO it's easier just to remove the belt. It's a good idea to remove the belt anyway since once you take the pump out, all this coolant will spill out - you don't want that on the belt. Mark the belt before you remove it to retain the timing, BTW.
