I don't now if anyone has done this but I wanted to share this with you all
I replaced a water pump yesterday and did it without taking off the crank pulley/ timing belt thus saving a bunch of time and effort. The key is to get a new Prestone water pump that is just the pump it's self without the back of the housing. If your patient you can change it with just taking the top timing cover off and remove the bolts from the bottom 2. Once you have that you can carefully remove the front pump side of the pump assembly. The top bolts are easy, the bottom 2 larger bolts are where it gets difficult. You just need to use an wrench ( 12mm I believe) to carefully remove them. You need to have the bottom 2 cover loose to get enough angle to remove them. Don't forget the one 10 mm bolt that right next to lower 12 mm bolt. Once you have them all loose, the front portion of the pump will pull way for the back portion. If the last person who change it used a gasket sealer, you will have to scrape it off with a razor blade or something. Replace the same way it came out. You will have to carefully manipulate the bottom bolts back in as the lower timing belt covers will be in the way. I am not sure about if this will work with atx. The part # is B 125-5532 and it is Prestone brand. It is a new pump and was under $100.

This is not a "secret". It's ok to do in a pinch, but if time allows, a new timing belt, front main and crank sensor can be had for around $85 more and you won't have to go back in there for a good long time.

also it never hurts to check the o rings in the pipe that runs the length of the valley. i thought i had a water pump leak when in fact it was both of these O rings. this lead me to redoing the front 60K, and replacing all the seals and hoses i could get to for the cooling system. i can now confidently say my SHO has a cooling system less than 5K and 1 year old. plus i got the Silicone Hoses from SS, but i'm not even sure they'll go on.

I have to say though, the front 60K is a whole lot less daunting once you've done it the first time. i will most likely never have a shop do it after it getting done this last time in the driveway.

I will see if it leaks, The timing belt looked new and the water pump looked semi new but it had gone bad so I skipped replacing the timing belt. I am told they are good for 100k . If it does leak, oh well, will just go in and pull it all down and replace the 2 other seals.

How do you do it that way without getting coolant all over the timing belt?

No secret, but not a good idea. Okay only as an emergency repair imho. The problem is it is very likely the small o-ring on the housing will be disturbed during this procedure and will leak.

well, just searched this thread. I just replaced O rings on SSteel hard tube and it is dripping off crank from up above somewhere.

It's the o-ring. You messed it up when you put it on and probably dry I'm assuming. Take it off and **** the outside of it lightly with dish some soap then try it again. Then before putting it all back together (guessing you are doing it the old fashioned way), run some water through the system and check for leaks.

I learned this the hard way.

Why would you need to change the waterpump if it's not leaking, and if it is leaking, shouldn't you go ahead and change the cps? as stated above, the 60K isn't all that bad after the first time.

right now I am going to go back in and reinstall crossover tube. pump or bearings are noisy and need replacement and cps is not in hand, so if O ring is issue and reinstall is solution, then I will be a happy camper till I get the pump and timing belt this weekend. i need more tools to complete 60k...
