So I had a spare tranny stored outside this past winter for a couple of months. The plastic tote that it was in had a crack in the cover and water dripped into the axle holes of the tranny case. There wasn't a lot of water in there, but I could see it beaded up on the inside. What are the gears, syncros, blocking rings, etc. made? Are they susceptible to rust. I'm drying it out now and it still looks pretty shiny in there (as far as you can see).

You need to disassemble the tranny and look over everything inside.
Lots of parts that can rust and corrode.

I would not worry about gears, blocking rings, etc. but you do need to take a good look at the bearings to make sure there is no rust on the rollers or races cause that will be trouble in short order if there is.

Thanks for the input, I'll probably have to open up the tranny anyway. I bought this 10 years ago and it been sitting in storage until I recently moved it outside. I just noticed the shift interlock bolt is missing.

As long as you did not "improve" your asset by washing it down with solvent before you stored it, you should not have issues.

As long as the tranny fluid was on the parts and in the tolerances of the parts, the water will not displace it with only gravity acting on it.

I would get some new fluid in there and rotate everything, if it is going to be stored any longer.

What can I do with my 1993 SHO? The darn thing lost its water pump and drove to a stand still (my daughter was driving it). I hate to trash it, I have had the car since new and it only has 52,000 miles on it. My mechanic thinks its a waste of time to fix! Geez, I really like this car, and was thinking to do a fix and repair on it. Is it really worth it though. The Kelly Blue Book value is like nothing! Help!!It looks like sperold's Red SHO! It was so fast with good looks!

It is better to start a new thread, with a new topic.

Don't ask for advice (except here) as everyone will tell you to scrap it.

It is getting expensive to source parts for these engines and a lot of stuff is obsolete.
If you have the money for the parts that are needed, then proceed, without your mechanic.

Engines (in used form) are not expensive (around $300.00), and they are so well built that there is seldom any problem with them. Get one from the same type of vehicle (3.0 MTX - 3.2 ATX - 1993). Keep your old engine for future considerations in case you ever want the "numbers matching" claim.

I would go that route, but it probably involves a road trip as shipping is troublesome (to crate and ship).
