Never had a crack in mine and the pumps seem to last, but shouldn't be too hard. You could remove the wheel and well mud guards. It sits right next to the A/C evaporator. Sounds like yours does not have the level sensor so you should only have the one connector for the pump.

I had used my pump in an experiment to add spray cooling to my radiator. Worked fairly well, but eventually put it all back as the water didn't last long enough made the radiator collect dirt. It was an interesting experiment. Ultimately I went with a 3-row radiator.
