So I was doing a little enthusiastic driving on the way home from work this afternoon and heard and felt something I hadn't before. It was during the 1st to 2nd upshift under WOT. A little "thump" was heard and felt through the floorboard under/in front of my feet. Not very loud and not very pronounced and it only happens during WOT upshift from 1st to 2nd.

Ummm...subframe bushing? Tranny mount? Engine mount? Bouncing off the rev limiter? I've done some minor repairs and maintenance on my '95 GL but have no experience with any of those.

I'm having the cams welded by Al Fitz Saturday but since he only works half days on Sat I doubt he'd have time to do anything with it. Any ideas on where to start looking? If it's something I definitely need to worry about then I might just leave the car and pick it up next week if that's ok with him.

thanks - I'm off to replace some clips in the driver's door panel. If you hear any curses streaming from the midwest it's probably me.

Trust me, a tranny cooler is on the list of things to get done. Just gotta stretch that list over several paychecks... So how much do you charge to put one of those in? j/k :p

The tranny seems fine, though, no slipping or other symptoms that I can tell. But I'm no mechanic. /shrug

I got all the clips in the driver door with no problems - the previous owner had tried to use some 'universal' clips that were too short. Now, the rear driver's side door, that one caused an extra trip to the parts store when I snapped a couple of the new ones off trying to position it correctly. Those little clips are friggin' brittle! Everything's nice & tight now which is one small annoyance out of the way.

I fixed my drivers door too, now I just need to fix my rear drivers door.

The cooler is from a Gen II ATX SHO, I got it for 20 bucks from a JY.

I could do it again once it warms up, it was pretty easy, as long as you don't need to go to the parts store three times like I did. Barbs, Hose, screws to hold cooler, aux cooler, hose clamps, and more fluid.

Did you buy your car new? With that many miles it could have been lucky and made it. Otherwise it's been rebuilt, possibly twice. A lot of them haven't lasted until 100k.

It also added another quart or so of fluid to the mix.

EDIT: Heat kills transmissions, that's why. And I'll post a link of how tiny the factory one is in the front. The "auxilury" cooler, after some fluid gets cooled in the radiator passes through the bottom tube (unfinned) of this. Thanks Ray

I think the potential problems of the transmission are over-stated as well. Mine is now at about 170K, on the original trans, no modifications, and showing no problems at all. Eventually it will need rebuilding as the bands go, which is just normal on a slush box eventually.

Get a GEN 2 ATX one and mount it to the steel bumper. I eliminated the radiator cooler and kept the OEM AUX cooler. Easier to plumb that way IMO.

That's what I did in the pics, as per SHOZ123's directions.

That cooler is a Gen II unit.

Is there a write up on replacing the cooler line or adding a trans cooler?

Overheating transmissions kills 90% of all automatics that ever fail, all failures we are talking about that every tranny shop has to deal with, you know what fixes that problem, a massive tranny cooler, that is why tranny coolers in all cars are a big hype. A big tranny cooler can double the life of you tranny no matter how you drive it.
