I did a search and it's seems that this (VSS) is the problem but I'm not sure. 94 ATX with a rebuild and shift kit. 1-2 on gas shifts not bad, 1-2 slow gas bang, really hard shit, downshift is ******* occasion. It also seems to not want to rev higher than 4k. From what I can see this is not any easy part to get to. I just finished the tranny swap and I am losing patience with this car. Assuming it is the VSS what can I expect to pay a mechanic to so it? The speedo works, the cruise never worked (at least since I have owned it). I am not real happy with the kid who helped me do my tranny swap and I rather not get him involved. Is it safe to drive it with low revs? Am I doing damage by doing so?

Sounds like a possible VSS problem. The RPM's not going above 4k is classic VSS. However, most will not get a downshift ( Passing gear kickdown ) And by you description, you do.

Check your codes. A faulty VSS should set a code.

Check your codes. The VSS will set a DTC. If you are trying to rev the engine past 4K in neutral, that's the rev limiter in the ATX computer. It's there to prevent overheating of the torque converter.

I knew about the neutral... It seems to be in all gears, I think after I pull the codes I am going to try it on the highway and turn to OD off around 55 (the OD works). I went to autozone but they can't pull codes on it because it's a 94 so I'm going to try the paper clip trick tomorrow.Wouldn't my speedo be flaky if the VSS was bad? From what I can see it is fine. Tomorrow will be the day to find out...... The weird thing is that the CEL goes on the same time it did before the tranny swap.

your speedo is driven by a cable, so even if the vss fails i am pretty sure your speedo would be fine. other than that i havn't a clue, but good luck.

I think I'm just going to sell it. I'd like to keep it if it turns out to be something stupid but we need a minivan anyway we're expecting in March. I love this car, but it just causes me too much stress to be worth it. Maybe when I have a reliable daily and some extra cash I'll get another one.

Not to slam you, but look at your statement. Take your car not shifting correctly and get 500 for it. Or make it work correctly, and get 1500. 1000 more for a 27 dollar part. Or even better, check the codes for free.

Think minivans dont have problems? Ask my caravan customers.

Bob, Mike's right. Listen to what he's saying.

I understand your frustration with this car, it's been nothing but problems since you bought it. Fix it up and then decide what you really want to do.

Stress? I hate to tell you, you're going to have that all your life brother. Get over it.

Come on out on the 18th and relax with the rest of us for the day :thumb:

the vss has nothing to do with your speedo, however it will mess your cruise control up, thats usually the first sign it gives except in some cases where it actually will set off your cel.

I know that any car that I buy, especially used can be a major problem and I am not narrowing it down to a caravan, I'd rather get a quest, I just threw the model out as an example. I know I will also take a loss if I sell the car as is but this is my daily, I have had it less than a year, and I swear to you it has been on the road maybe 3 months of that year. We've had to bum rides and cars since September just to get my kid to school, my own business is suffering due to my lack of transportation and the guilt I feel every time my 8 months pregnant wife has to walk home from the T (subway) station in the cold and dark is swaying my decision. I have to get a van out of necessity, I have a 7 year old, a newborn next month, my wife (she is tiny by the way!), and a 115lb German shepherd and if anyone from here has met me than can attest that my being 6'5 and 245 adds more to the mix. If I can find a used van for not much more than our tax return I may decide to keep the SHO and park it. It is all up in the air, but I do know that we need something else. I really don't want to lose the car, but my mind has to win over the heart.

I know what you're saying, it is a $27 dollar part but the labor will **** me. Look at my above post and you'll understand why.

Bob, you can replace the VSS yourself in the driveway, it's just a PITA. Go at it from the pass. front wheel approach, with a 1/4-drive ratchet set, and a lot of patience (gooooooosfrabbah!). Small fingers are a plus. You will do it blind so expect to do it by feel, or with an extended mirror, etc.; having someone with a flashlight can help.

Good luck.

Fred, this is on top of abs light, brake light a freaksho power steering issue that has gone unresolved, the pump is fine, the rack is fine and the tensioner is fine, still no PS and a radio that has suddenly decided it prefers feedback to music (I know it's minor, but in lieu...). I'm ready to rev this bitch up to it's 4 grand limit and muscle it off of a cliff

You must have been one of those Hollywood Marines:) No self respecting Paris Island Marine would come this far and quit. Seriously, if you think this is a tough love hate relationship give your marriage a few more years. Wait till your kids are teens!
Some autozones or Advance autos have the right connector to check codes and some don't. Try a different one. I have my 93 codes check all the time for free.

To me, it sounds as if your decision is made. I know first hand that cars suck when the continue to nickel and dime you. Post it on the Forum as a fixer-upper and move on.

Thanks for being a marine... And good luck.

Well there is what looks like a great 94 on ebay for $3500 buy it now with 87k. I remember passing on a 1966 Ferrari 275 GTB that needed some TLC in 1979. :nut:
Yeah I couldn't come up with the big $12,000 he wanted for it. :smash:
Hope in 10 yrs the SHO becomes as rare. Ok I'm dreaming.
