If you stand on the passenger side of the vehicle and reach down behind the motor you should be able to feel the vss heat shield. Just follow the speedo cable. I was just doing this today. Even though you can feel it from the top I read that it has to be removed from the bottom.

Nah man I take the passengers side tire off, take off the splash sheild and get to it from their. It is easily viewable and easier to get at than through the bottom.

Here is an illustration. The VSS plugs into the opening in #19 and points toward the flywheel. As was mentioned, unless you have tiny hands and long arms, you will struggle to get to it from the bottom or top, but should be able to reach in from the passenger side to get to it. fyi, the bolt that holds it in requires a 10mm wrench on the units I've messed with.
