I swear I read somewhere that the VSS effects the shifting on the ATX SHO's? Am I right? HAs anyone with an ATX ever replaced it, and have it help the shifting out at all? I am running out of idea's, I cant take my crappy 1st-2nd shifts anymore. I know its not the trans, because everyother gear shifts great. Do you guys think it would be worth it to replace it and see? shrug

EDIT: I also would like to add, that my "on/off OD" button on the shifter does NOT work. IF this helps at all. Thanks. I did a search, and I also found something called the TSS? Whats that?

Unless you are getting a code for the VSS I wouldn't replace it. Usually signs of a VSS are very hard and sudden downshifts when you are slowing down. It almost feels like the car is "falling" out of gear. The two best things to do for the atx is to get a rebuild done(when its time) with the trans-go shift kit and get the Ted B LPM. The shift kit beefs up the internals and the LPM can increase line pressure and give the computer better shift points.

The O/D button sometimes gets its connection severed inside the shifter have you tried to take off the shifter to see if thats the case?

You can follow the steps here on how to take off the shifter: SHOtimes article

Nope, I dont get any sudden hard downshifts like you said, Although I do need to run my codes, so I will do that and see what happens. The only thing that I am worried about is my 1st-2nd shifts studders so bad. I have the D4U1 computer, and LPM, and it doesn't seem to help.

I had a hard shift from 1-2. It felt like my hole tranny was going to drop. It would happen when the engine got warm... no problems on a cold start. It eventually got worse and more frequent.

My hard shifts from 1-2 turned out to be the TSS the transmission speed sensor. 24.29 at the dealer part # F1DZ*7M01*A. Its an easy install through the wheelwell, you will have to take the wheel off. Its right above the axle on the drivers side in the tranny block. It is held in by one small hex screw and has wires going to it I used a 1/4 ich drive with a flex extension, removed the screw and pryed the sensor out w/ a flathed. Took about a half hour from beginning to end.

Ive also replaced the VSS, when it was shot my car didnt want to come out of O/D when I would floor it to pass someone, also apparently if I would have tryed to use it my cruise cvontrol it would have not been working. Thats one of the telltale signs that the VSS is malfunctioning.

I hope you did not misinterpert what I posted. I meant that I DONT think that your issue has anything to do with the VSS and I DONT think it needs to be replaced at this point by the info you posted. My experienced guess from your 1-2 hard shifts is that its your TSS.
When I replaced my VSS it was a year previous and I had different shifting problems( not coming out of O/D therefore it would not downshift when trying to pass). There were however no problems with the trans going INTO O/D). Your O/D button not working is most likely related to the wire under the console being severed, another easy fix! :)
As for a code I dont know about the VSS because a mechanic took care of that one. The TSS didnt throw a code initially when it first started acting up. I drove about 2000 miles with it slamming(ouch!) into 2nd before a stored code # "639" finally showed up and it led me to do a search on the transmission speed sensor.
Unfortunately be advised that someone else was posting about a 1-2 hard shift that sounded just like a bad TSS and it turned out to be a broken accumulator spring :( . But for the 24 bucks and only 1/2 hour labor I'd at least try the TSS.
I hope there wer'nt any misunderstandings and if there were this helps, let me know
Steve

I see what you mean. I will go ahead and try replacing the TSS, and see if that helps. I sure hope that I dont have any problems inside the trans! I would'nt enjoy that. The TSS is the sensor right inside the wheel well right?

yep, its just above the cv axle shaft on the drivers side going into the side of the tranny block. It may be hard to see at first because of road gunk in the wheelwell but there will be a couple of wires leading to it from the engine bay.
It should be easy to spot but if you need a pic. let me know, my car is out right now but as soon as its back I can post one
