I dont know where that dag gone thing is...can someone tell me what i have to remove to change it?
The problem is my cruise control doesnt work, power steering acts funny, and my tranny shifts weak, all after my car warms up. That is between the o and r in nORmal. I suspect that the vss is acting up from the heat. Anyone have a suggestion....?

in the transmission. from what i hear, its a bear to get to. you almost have to be a contortionist to remove/install it with the engine/trans in the car.

The VSS can be seen through the passenger side wheelwell with the tire removed. Some have said that it can be removed through here but I can not see how. Its on top of the trans block above where the cv enters. You can remove the heat sheild from here but thats about it (abeit not easily) To get at it youre going to have to drop the y-pipe, undo the speedo cable from the sensor by removing the retaining clip and locate the single hex screw that holds it in place and pry the sensor out...all by feel. There is no access from the top.
Or do as I did after giving up once I looked at the rusted exhaust studs holding the y-pipe and realizing what I was in for. Buy the VSS at autozone, find a unsuspecting shop with a good reputation and pay out the 3 hours labor that the book calls for...unless you have access to a torch, a lift, and small hands. I wish I could have done it myself but I know when to throw in the towel. Just make sure they replace the heat sheild or the new VSS will fry prematurely.

BTW a bad VSS will cause a CE light most likely w/ a code, bizarre shifting especially in stop and go traffic or on hills and occasionally rpm drops and stalling when stopped. Although the 2 times mine failed I still had a working cruise control.?

Maybe on a manual but an atx is alot more confined... to each they're own. Both times mine were replaced they came from underneath. If you can see how to reach it through the top may the force be with you.

You mean this:

Just pull the lower clip out and pull up on the cable. You can use extension to remove the sensor with a (forgive me if I'm wrong) 22mm deep socket. Maybe a 7/8 in if necessary. The best method is to drop the y-pipe and use an open ended or crow foot on it.

The ATX VSS is not located in the same area as the MTX VSS. Dale is correct that it takes a lot more work and bones made of rubber pretty much to get at it.
