Recently, I had my original steering rack ('91 MTX) replaced at a small shop, since it was leaking everywhere. Turns out, the b@stard installed a SLO VAPS rack to save $100 (but still trying to charge me $200 for it). From what he told me, he had to "plug a port" somewhere, since it was leaking profusely. When I drove home, I noticed that, aside from being completely out of alignment, I had a hard time making a right hand turn. This got worse over the following days, now it's actually harder to make a right hand turn than with no power steering at all. I got a 4-wheel alignment, and the car feels slightly better, but the steering is still off and hard to turn to the right. Plus, I can hear the PS pump whining. So my question is, can I convert this rack to a non VAPS rack? Seems that the resistance to making right hand turns is caused by PS fluid, maybe the guy plugged the wrong port, or maybe he botched something else entirely? Thanks to anyone who knows a solution to this (short of replacing the steering rack).

I agree honestly i've been through it all with mechanics and fed up with their ******** take it to him and tell him to do what he should have done right in the first place.

I've almost gotten into a fist fight with one because of him giving me my car like shit, you get loud with them and show them you're not an ******* like the rest of people and you'll see how much different they treat you..like a fcking king trust me i've been through it

I would definitely take it back as something is physically wrong with the rack. A VAPS rack can be used without problem in a non-VAPS car, assuming you plug the port where the VAPS servor would attach.

I removed the VAPS servo from my 93, and used a plug in the port. It was better than it had been, but still was too light for my liking. I now have a non-VAPS rack in the car, and I removed the VAPS module.

Long story short, using the rack without you accepting it was good on the mechanics part, but it should have worked. Something else is wrong.
