I keep hearing a tapping sound coming from the top of my engine. I was told that it was a valve and changing the oil would fix it. I just changed the oil as the car was due, and the sound is still there. Any ideas?

Perhaps a timing belt tensioner?

Which side is the noise coming from? You have to give us more info to go on in order for us to help you more effectively.

Since yours are mtx, dont know if it make same sound as mine(atx). I had that problem when I first heard the tapping sound...tho it was the bearings or the timing chain tensioner by the camshaft but when rev past @1100 rpm sound went away  ...until the discovery that it was the timing belt tensioner hydraloic that gave away making the tapping sound... not sure if mtx tensioner would make that noise too... good luck...

My money is on a sticky timing chain tensioner. 90% of the SHOs I have heard ticking from has had tensioner problems.

The tensioner was shot, but that was the cause of the ticking/knocking not the source. The bad timing belt tension results in the timing being off and the #1 piston predetonating.

From what you guys said it sounds like the tensioner, because when you rev the engine the sound does go away.
