Just finished the valve adjustment on my 95 with 83,500 miles on it. I found 3 shims that measured in spec, but visual inspection revealed the plating was flaking off on them. When doing the valve lash adjustment pull all the shims out and check for the plating wearing off. One at a time makes it a lot easier. Ford no longer had the 2350 shims, had to go to a motorcycle shop for that one. I had done the valves 2 years ago, all were in spec then and now, but a ticking had developed. A couple exhaust were at .014",,thats in spec, but wide enough to tick loudly.

Perry,

I have seen a lot of shims, but never any with flakes coming off of them. What kind of oil are you using? I remove, inspect and replace all 24 shimns every time I gap the valves. After you do all the work to get to them, why do anything else?

I have also seen probably fifteen or so shims with flaking metal coming off. That is the exact reason why I always change EVERY shim wether it is in spec or not. Scott I think Perry was just giving others a reference to pull every shimm. I know he does when he does a job. And not just check the gap.

Ah,,,(mumbling so Doug Lewis will not hear me),,,Mobil 1 synthetic.

The ticking did go away.

I have also used the Mobil 1 in my 92, which now has 247,000 miles on it. No problems there, but I haven't looked at those shims since about 175,000 miles. The wear on these shims looks identical to lifter wear on many older V8s, does not look worn, just the plating is missing in spots. I am thinking the disks may not have been the best from the beginning, the rest are all identical and ok. By the way, the hi milage 92 still has many of the original shims in it.

because shoshop will send you used shims with holes in them and incorrect lash caps if you're real lucky.

I have seen some shims that are worn in the middle but not the flaky kind that you are talking about.
