I'm pretty sure that I have an extreme vacuum leak on my '97, has anyone else experienced this or have a suggestion as where to start?

Follow the sound.

If you can't hear it, use carb cleaner or starter fluid and spray around suspect areas with the car idling and listen for the car to stumble.

Break clean!

Spray around any area's you think are suspect and listen for a change in idle.

EDIT: guess I got distracted why I was answering and someone else said the same thing. But yah, thats what I would do.
