the other day i broke my waterpump belt tensioner and rather than replacing it i would like to at least try a waterpump belt off of an 04-05 Duratec, i would steal the one off my sable to test it but i have a problem, i have no idea how the belt on the V8 comes off. does the waterpump need to come off? also for the tensioner does the waterpump need to come off in order to remove it? I would like to get this fixed before I park the car for the body work i have planned. thanks in advance for any help!

Been a while but look at the bolts on the right side of the belt path. I forget if they go to the tensioner or the pump, but you can see them go through what looks like a long casting to accommodate the bolts. One of them actually is a spacer and comes apart when you remove the bolt. You can route the belt through that without removing any other parts. It can be hard to tell with enough grime on there.

Now what belt are you talking about? On the SHO the waterpump is driven off the rear of the head where all the other engines( be it durteck or vulcan) are driven off the front with the Alt Ac +Ps.

The SHO is a one and only

actually the 2.5L Duratec found in the Contour/Mystique/Cougar and a few others has the intake cam driven waterpump. then the 3.0L in the Taurus/Sable adopted it in 01 and carried it through until 05. in 04 they went to a tensionerless system on the 3.0L. I swapped an 04 engine into my 2000 Sable so i am going to see if that belt will fit on the SHO without a tensioner. that way i can delete the tensioner all together.

ok so an 04 Duratec belt will not work. it is actually longer than the one on the V8. I ended up fixing the tensioner. to get it off without removing the waterpump i chopped the head of the bolt off and then found a new shorter on as there was over 1/4 of unused threads on teh original anyway. what had happened is the spring overextended and slipped off of its little tab. just put it ack on with a needle nose and tried putting it back on and it slipped off again, what i did was bend that little tab downward so that the spring had more room to move before it fell off. and its all back together now working perfect.

though i now have a problem i have not noticed before and im not sure how long it has been doing this but it seems like a knock has developed under the rear of the front cam cover. it happens when i rev the engine. it does not do it when it is just iddling and it is not constant. it sounds like a main bearing but not as loud... im worried it may be the cam shafts binding in the head. does this engine use cam bearings or or the bearings actually machined into the head?
