OK, I may be a noob to working on cars (though having a ton of fun with it)... but now we're in
my wheelhouse. Let's see if I can finally contribute something other than friendship and loads of questions
Someone mentioned drivers, so I assume there's some custom driver for it? I'm going to work with that assumption for a minute...
If you're running Windows, I'm guessing you (like most others) have "upgraded" to Windows 10 since you last used the tuner, after all you said over a year ago, long before Windows 10 released. If you
were running Windows 8, then you
may or may not have a driver compatibility issue. If you were running Windows 7 (assuming you weren't running earlier versions) then you will almost definitely have a driver compatibility issue.
Again, this all assumes it needs a special driver at all, but more on this in a minute.
The tuner I bought from Livernois was the "MyCalibr8or Touch" a.k.a. the DashDAQ XL by Drew Technologies. (No longer sold, sadly.) So, without a doubt, different than yours. Mine has an SD card in it that's easy to remove, and the colorful touch screen interface is so awesome that I actually keep mine permanently mounted in the car and use it as a gauge. (It offers lots of gauge pages.) Anyhow, I've used it that way for a GOOD year and a half now in my car, every day, and use the SD card only to transfer files, it's simple and easy that way. In any case, I use mine daily, and yours was in a box for 14 months. It's very, very unlikely that it got damaged unless it was exposed to extreme heat and/or moisture, or unless you were jamming things into the USB or ODBII ports... that's just never a good idea, lol.
Anyhow, these are solid state devices with no moving parts, other than the buttons, and it was known to work before, so it probably isn't defective. So let's rule out the device. Can you hook it up to the car and use it in other ways? Does it communicate with the car, pull codes, do anything else? If so, chances are it's fine, but let's keep going.
Now, that only takes care of the overall device health and the ODBII port. In looking at the pictures on Livernois' site, it seems to have a USB port as well. That being the case, that would mean it's either treated as a generic USB mass storage device (like a thumb drive) which is how mine works more or less, or it has a special driver (like a game controller might) and communicates with your PC over USB. If the latter, you'll need to ask Livernois for updated drivers.
Since I don't see anything on the Livernois site about downloadable drivers or software, I'm assuming it
doesn't require a special driver but is instead being treated like a USB mass storage device, and would show up as a disk drive on your computer. (I could be wrong, again I don't have that specific tuner, so I don't know for sure either way.) Anyhow, assuming this is all correct, and assuming the device is probably OK (especially if it hooks up to your car OK) then the next two diagnostic steps are clear:
1. Try a different cable. USB cables go bad more often than the devices they connect. It could definitely cause your symptoms, and is very easy and inexpensive to fix. (Buy a new one!)
2. With a known good cable... Plug it into another computer, any computer, your friend's computer, neighbor's computer, dog's computer, anything you can find. If you have an android phone that
might possibly work too, at least to verify that the device can speak to the USB port... you can hook anything up to your Android's USB port, keyboard, etc., whatever, so if all else fails, could be worth a shot if you can find a suitable cable. Worst case, if you don't have access to another computer, go to Walmart and try it on one of theirs on display.
In any case, once you have secured a second computer to try, see if it gives you an error like it did on your own PC. At this point, if it works on another PC, then it's something with your computer that's wrong. (And then use that other computer you've borrowed to put the v10 tune on your device!!) If it doesn't work on another computer (make sure you try one with Windows 7 if you can find one to rule out Windows 10 compatibility)... in all cases using a known good cable.... then I'd say...
3. Now it's time to ask for a new device. It's possible the USB comms chip on it died, unlikely but possible.
To summarize, rule out, in this order: general device health (hook to your car), the cable, the computer (trying Windows 7 and/or an updated driver.) Just rule out everything but the device in order to know for sure, or best case, able to work around the issue and get that v10 tune installed!
Hope that helps man!! I wanna hear how awesome it is!!
