Maintenance cost: Gen III. Newer car, fewer problems.

Performance: All depends on what you want.

If i was going to get an ATX the GEN 3 is the way to go. The body is much stiffer and the car is just better built structurally. Engine performance is similar and engine maintenance is much less than the V6 too.

Never to late to reiterate. If you've decided on an ATX, and you aren't biased toward the styling of one generation or the other, go with a Gen III. Aside from the body stiffness factor, the Gen III offers a much more luxurious driving experience. A Gen III SHO is the cheapest sedan you can buy that effectively blends performance and luxury.

Before buying, check the ATX fluid and PS fluid. If either one is extremely dark, you may want to reconsider. Once you have found a Gen III with good PS and ATX fluids, install an auxiliary ATX cooler, flush the ATX, change the filter, and refill with a good synthetic ATF. Get the cam sprockets welded. Then sign up for the V8SHO.com e-mail list, sit back, and enjoy the ride. :D

iv heard form other SHO owners that the V8s are a lot nicer cars but thare not as fast as the Gen 1 or 2. thare heavyer and only a 20 HP diffrents i would rather go with the older ones i think they stand out better just my two cents

I will go with a gen 3, less maintenance issues and nicer interior, also gen 2 atx and gen 3 are almost identical in performance, I know because my brother owns a 95 atx and my is a 97, we used to race when his transmission was ok, now I can take him pretty easy.

The gen2 ATX is actually slightly heavier than the gen3. Gen2 ATX VS gen3 is a pretty close race stock for stock. I would (and did) go with the gen3 simply because of the sound. Can't beat that throaty V8 rumble.

Gen III's are nice lookin cars but i dont think they stand out as much as the older ones do. i drove on once and it must have been the car cause it didnt fell like it ran right. i race my buddys 94 ATX in it and he killed it by like 2 cars. thats the only reason i go with the Gen I/II but thare might have been something wrong with the one i was driveing

Definitely something wrong. I'll bet the secondaries were stuck shut, or there was a coil pack problem. I've driven at least a dozen Gen 3s, and a couple Gen 2 ATXes, and I think they are generally similar in performance. 2 or 3 of the Gen 3s I drove seemed to be factory freaks that had a bit more pep off the line. I bought one of them.

The Gen 2 SHOs definitely stand out more though, in appearance. That's another reason why I bought the Gen 3. Very few people are even aware that there was a Gen 3 SHO. It's the ultimate sleeper. Plus it's a big improvement over the flex-o-matic Gen 1&2.

The major disadvantage of the Gen 3, in the opinion of many, is the lack of 5-speed tranny. Otherwise, I'd take my Gen 3 over my old 95 any day. I also feel that the sound of a car will make it seem faster. Therefore with the simple addition of some mufflers to a Gen 3, you have a deep V8 sound that can't be beat.

Odd, I don't seem to have a problem with any early GENS getting by me around here...

Since I own a '98, I have to vote for the Gen 3's as well. I bought it the summer of '02 with just under 50k miles on it, looked like new in and out. I've had the cams welded, and new brakes put on so far. Had a SES light problem, but this summer it hasn't come back yet :)

I love the sound of that V8. Roll down the windows and drop the pedal at about 20mph and just listen... In a year or two I'll probably get some Flowmasters on there :dribble:

At first I was worried about low-end torque as well (something my '91 PoPo has more than enough of), but I've learned that if you just absolutely stomp the pedal, you can burn rubber if you need to.

Carter should race Tim or Fred Hurder, that would be interesting. :D
I am going to be in California for the convention looking for some decent competition. Lord knows I can't find any around here. :****:

It would have been nice if Ford gave the Gen III an MTX option, but overall I'm pleased with the car. One thing I don't like is the lack of a decent aftermarket fot the car. Something to think about.
