I have a 1996. It sporadically will start and run for a few seconds, then die. It may repeat 2-3 times, then crank but not fire. Let it sit and it may or may not start normally. When it runs it runs fine. 70000 miles, cams welded. Have replaced idle control valve with no effect. Any suggestions out there?

Check for a bad or loose crank sensor, if you have access to a lab scope you can verify functionality. I have seen the connectors get loose on these and it won't necessarily throw a CEL.

when it does die, does it spudder and die or does it just cut out.

Also, are you telling me the car starts all by itself? Sorry couldn't resist.

Sounds like a crank sensor or fuel pump to me. A crank sensor is about 20 bucks so i'd start there by just putting one in.I see you live in rustville, so I'd soak the bolts a few days before you end up snapping one off.
