Using H20 to decarbon?

I've heard some 'old timers' talking about spraying water into the carbs to decarbon the heads...is this an old wives tale? Plain water??

There is a procedure on SHOtimes that explains how this is done. You use carb and intake cleaner first then water. It works.

My dad is one of those "old timer" mechanics and he said they used to do it all the time. I imagine using distilled water and changing the oil afterwards would be the best way to do it.

dont use too much at once...the spray bottle works best

I'm not too keen on revving my ATX to 4 G's for the 10 minutes it's going to take to unload a spray bottle of windex filled with water, lol. I really don't think my TQ converter would like me after that one. How about having the rpm's at 3k and using an empty milk jug with a piece of 3/8" tubing? Would Perrier be better than Evian? boink

Don`t spray carb cleaner into the throttle body,it`s been knows to wash out the bearings on a few motors.I`d always be leary of trying to decarbon an engine like ours.If you break a large enough piece loose,you can bend a valve.If you`re lucky,it`ll just break apart with high revs,but you never know.
