Used motor ,Good??how to tell??

There is a SHO(91)in a junk yard by my house and they dont know the condition of the motor or tranny.
I reached in the car and ran it thru the gears really smoothly!!
The engine has no water in the oil or any valve cover leaks that is noticable.
tomorrow I will run a compression check on the engine and see what I get
The car speedometer says 95,000 miles and he said 500.00 for the engine and tranny,but its as is !!!
Any suggestions??

On the transmission you can remove the filler plug and check the fluid. If it's full, then the trans has not blown the diff, and if the fluid level cannot be determined through the fill hole, it can be low on fluid, increasing internal wear, or the diff can be shot.

As for the motor, it's a risk; the cams can be worn, timing chain tensioners worn, broken timing belt, spun bearing(s), warped heads, and so on.

I would not exceed $300 for the two together not knowing the condition, and that's if the trans is full of fluid.

Does the J-yard have keys to start the motor up?

I'm going to go out there today with a spray bottle of gasoline and a battery to see if the car will crank over and run.
I don't know if they have the keys,but that should not be a issue

ps if the differential is bad couldn't I use mine,or does it damage the tranny when it breaks?

It damages the casing in most cases, as it shoots through.

Is this J-yard anywhere around FTW?
