Minus new wires, which may have screwed me for the moment, since the car idles at about 800ish (950's normal idle, right?) after idling at 1200 when the engine is cold. When the engine is cold, it will barely hit 7000 rpm at WOT in neutral. Really has to fight it. And it sounds like it has five cylinders.

Also, the car has developed an occasional backfire, especially after the engine is warming up. I'm inclined to think this is a combination symptom of having a small amount of 6 week old gas in the tank and bad wires (which WILL be fixed on my next day off).

Any other ideas from you experienced gentlemen in case this isn't the case?

Thanks!
Nick

Are you sure you got the timing right? Sounds to me like you may have messed up the timing. Also I wouldn't worry about 6 week old gas. Sometimes my gas gets to be 2 months old and it makes no difference.

Btw, I wouldn't wind it up to 7k when its cold.

You know, I don't have the equipment to check the timing, but I didn't tweak with the timing belt at all, unless rotating the cams while the car was in fifth would have messed it up. I just did the spark plugs and new gaskets for the valve covers, and in the next couple days, the wires will be replaced, but I wanted to see if new wires were necessary. Turns out they probably are.

In other words, I didn't do the front 60K, just the upper 60k.

I did apply the wires correctly, but now I'm replacing them with new ones. Give you an update in about an hour.

Thanks for all the responses, guys.

Oh gosh this thing is fast. I placed the wires, made sure they were seated correctly, and all that jazz. Now the car pulls like a beast. However, it's got a coolant leak on the intake because I keep forgetting to double check that hose. Working on it now.

Leak is fixed. We just ended up taking off the throttle body so we could take off the bastard coolant hose and fit a hose clamp that uses a socket rather than clumsy pliers. On the downside, I basically had to throw like a quart and a half of water in there, and since then, when the engine is under 2k rpm, it heats up almost to over the "NORMAL" spectrum. It didn't do this before, so I'm just going to buy some actual coolant and put it in there tomorrow or something.

You may have air in the system. Water is better at absorbing heat than antifreeze, so having a mostly water mixture will not cause it to overheat.

Run it with the cap off. Kinda squeeze the upper radiator hose. Did you replace the thermostate? If so did it have the valve at the top to let air through? If not you may have to wait til the therm opens up. Ive also heard of people putting the front up on jack stands to make the radiator the highest point.
