I'm picking up another 99' SHO on Friday that has a perfectly good trans in it, (car was totaled in an accident), and I'm going to rebuild the trans. Or have it rebuilt. What are the best things to buy/get that'll make it more reliable. The car was hit in the back so the whole motor is in good condition too, besides the radiator. Any suggestions will help tons!

Trans-Go shift kit, external transmission cooler, and if you want a chip such as a X-Cal that helps firm up shifts.

Will this also help in performance too?

On a side note, I knew you would be the first to respond for some reason lol!

Get a better than OEM TC and use Amsoil ATX fluid!! The OEM TC does not have all the internal fins brazed on, they are just crimped.

You can also improve the cooling immensely by replacing the factory steel lines with 3/8" tranny hose. Use 1/4"mNPT x 3/8" hose barbs. Ditch the radiator cooler while you are at it.

Not to sound stupid or anything but not to sure what OEM TC means? Sorry. And where is the radiator cooler at?

OEM=Original Equipment Manufacturer, AKA Ford parts

TC=Torque Converter

The radiator cooler is in the radiator on the passenger side.

Why are you rebuilding? Aren't you selling your car? :nut:
Yeah, I'm selling. BUT since I picked up this "parts" SHO for only $250 and it seems like the trans isn't going to last that much longer I'm going to rebuild it. Maybe I will end up keeping the car for awhile who knows. But the first person with $5,500 that wants the car, its theres!

How much is the shift kit, trans cooler, and chip? Where can I find these things at?

Naw, just for the day... I'm actually getting the rest of the stuff I have out there. Packing it, and making another long road trip!

high flow pump shaft, higher stall TC, shift kit, 1-2 extra clitches in the clutch packs, tighter shimming of said packs, backdated pump shaft gasket (1 pices vs. 2 piece)

That will make it about as bulletproof as you can get

Here's a site someone posted that has all the upgraded parts and problems they fix for the AX4N tranny.

http://www.transmissionspecialty.com/parts/DM/AX4N.htm

That is one of Sonnax's subsidiaries' website that give specific Sonnax applications for various common repairs and upgrades.

It's basically an online version of the Sonnax catalog.

I was quoted $1200 for an upgraded TC from Doug Lewis.

.....and??

That is for a bullet-proof converter. It has a billet front cover and oversized lockup clutch, billet stator and furnace-braised fins.

providing my tranny decides to go, I would just like one that is more heavy duty but doesn't shift super hard. Does anybody sell something like that?
