ok. so i got up under there and started poking around. here are some pics to help us along.

i found that the switch denoted with the red arrow does nothing to brake lights or allowing me to shift out of park.
i found that the switch denoted by the blue arrow, when it is moved up or down (like the yellow arrows) it does the brake lights *and* allows me to shift out of park.
after working this switch back and forth many times (50+) it seems to be operating mostly normaly now.
do you think that some wd40 would help the switch operate correctly, or that i should replace it regardless?
thanks in advance.

so simple logic tells me that you should be having brake lamp issues as well as shifting into gear issues.

I wonder what the other switch does... cruise control related maybe?

regardless, just replace the switch. cant be too expensive. shrug

The switch pointed to by the blue arrow is the stop lamp switch and the motion is not in the direction of the yellow arrows, but in the direction that changes the load on that visible spring. The switch is the Borg-Warner S6031 for $6.79 from O'Reilly or the Wells F4843 for $5.29 from AutoZone. The only tool required to replace it is needle nose pliers to pull out that reddish colored lock clip from the shaft. Be sure you make a note of the location of the bushings and washers on that shaft when you remove and replace the switch.
