unknown part?

on the intake, what are the 2 little canisters facing each other for? they are placed about half way through and the hoses meet into a T which goes to an clip...i found a large tear in one of the hoses....and my car has been running real bad lately..pretty sluggish..and as soon as i rolled up the hole in electical tape until i can get a new one its fast as ****..seriously i didnt know my car had so much potentiol....i also replaced plugs/wires tonight..so i dunno what did it..but i was just curious what those are for and if that made all the difference in performance?

Those are the vacuum actuators for the secondary intake runners. A damaged vacuum line will result in a vacuum leak which is never good, as well as preventing that secondary from closing and thus resulting in low power and rough running under ~3800 RPM's. Go to the auto parts store to get some replacement vacuum hose and replace the hoses going to both secondaries, and check the remainder of your vacuum lines for wear or checking and you should be in good shape.
