Hi all,
I am in the process of tearing down my front end and ran into an issue with my Sho Source UDP. I hooked up my puller like normal, but instead of pulling off the pully, it pulled out the threads. I was using a 3/8" ratchet and it wasnt hard to turn at all. I have gone ahead and tapped the holes slightly larger. If this doesnt work I have a 3 jaw puller, I am just worried about messing up my pulley. Besides heating it prior to pulling it, does anyone have any ideas? Thanks

Jeremy

My ASP UDP crank pulley did that last year.

I drilled bigger and re-tap'd both holes.

That time it worked.

Glad to hear you got it off. For any future searchers, here are some tips:

1) Never use a 3 jaw (or 2 Jaw puller) on the crank pulley, it will destroy it.

2) If it feels like the UDP does not want to come off, use a heat gun to gently heat the aluminum so it expands. Once it is warm, spray a small amount of lubricant on the crank so it can wick between the pulley and the crank.

3) Use the heat gun again to gently heat the pulley and then when it is warm, try your harmonic dampner puller of your choice. If it does not move, apply a little more heat.

When reinstalling the aluminum crank pullies, it also helps if you heat them a bit first. They go on easier that way.

What size are they now? m8x 1.25?

Is it possible to tap these things for m10 or m12 before they are shipped?

The holes in the OEM crank damper are M8 - 1.25. I'd be cautious about going any larger than M8, as the slots in most damper pullers aren't much wider than an M8 bolt shank.

I always put a light coating of clean oil on the crank snout before installing the damper, they usually slide right on.

Only once did one not "slide right on" with me. It started, then hung up, so I sat down on a stool by the wheel well, applied the heels of both palms to the face of the damper and gave it a good full body shove. It seated alright, unfortunately, I'd absent-mindedly allowed my fingertips to wrap around the back side of the damper, and they got a good squeezing. This incident is how I got a reputation in the neighborhood for working on cars, a cursing - A LOT.

I ended up going to 1/4-20. Thought about trying to stay metric, but it was the tap I had avialable.

Yea those are the same little holes I have in my set. My problem is with the washers... I always seem to bow a few out when I try to use em to pull that pulley out. The bolts are smaller than the gap in the puller.
