So, I got the fluid changed in my transmission, and it's doing a shitton better.....now, for some reason, I'm dribbling tranny fluid out from where the shift rod goes into the tranny. Any way to replace a seal in there without tearing the tranny out and cracking the case open?

If there's a way , I want to know too. I want to punch the jackazz who decided to design the seal inside....

You'll need to drain the transaxle, but the shift rod seal is serviceable from the outside.

Before you start, you'll want to obtain E43Z-7288-A; gear selector input seal, and a new shift rod boot, don't have the part number handy for that.

1. Drain transaxle.
2. Disconnect the shift linkage from the gear selector rod.
3. Remove the shift rod boot.
4. Pull the old seal out with some pliers around the metal ring that protrudes. Try not to damage or scratch the surface of the rod.
5. Inspect the shaft for burrs or corrosion, look at the hole where the bolt for the shift linkage attaches, if there are any burrs on this hole, they will cut the new seal you're about to install, so de-burr both sides of this hole. If the shaft is corroded or pitted, clean it up best you can with some Emery cloth or very fine sandpaper.*
6. **** the shaft and new seal with some ATF.
7. For an install tool, I use a deep socket that will fit over the shift shaft. You may have to push the shaft fully in (4th gear) to fully seat the seal.
8. Install the seal, tap it home with the deep socket and a mallet.
9. Re-install the old or install a new boot.
10. Reconnect the shift linkage.
11. You're done.

* When I rebuilt MTX-IV trannys, I would put this shaft in the drill press and give it a high polish with crocus cloth, that really smooths up the shifting.

Gary, you da man!!!!!! Any idea how much them two things cost?
I think SHONut has them for $10 or so.

You in St. Joe Michigan? I used to live there, worked at LECO on Hilltop Road. Had a place out on Hollywood Road, nearer to Stevensville.

Gary, I've replaced the seal before without draining the transmission. After installing the Quaife, I put in all new seals. Turned out that the shifter seal leaked. I didn't want to drain the thing again so I put it on a lift and just swapped seals. It didn't have any leaks.

BTW, my transmission is getting better, however, I'm still running the Redline. I don't have any leaks! I'm especially glad that I don't have fluid coming up the speedo anymore!.

Actually, I'm in stevensville, too. Right on the corner of Red Arrow and Defay about a half a mile down from the bowling alley. My boss lives in that trailer park right out near Hollywood and John Beers.

I haven't lived there since 1987, but remember that area well. I rented one of the duplexes at the intersection of Hollywood and Rocky Weed (strangest street name ever...) Roads.

Yeah, you don't get much of a leak doing the shift rod seal, as it's a pretty tight fit in the case bore.

Glad to hear that your trans is becoming a friendlier implement. You put a lot of new/modified parts in that thing, and it takes awhile for everything to wear-in and get comfortable. Leaks suck, that's why I'm super ****-retentive at re-assembly, especially about cleanliness, and no extra parts left on the bench - it pays off.

I know that area....oddly enough, I grew up out there in Fountain. Well, I a little bit south of Fountain, but went to Fountain Public Schools. Good times, good times......
