Anyone changed the tweeters in the pillars on a 2014+? After an initial look at the setup today I'm wondering how you get to them and if they're going to use the same speaker adapter the door speakers used? Looks like you have to take the upholstered pillar cover off. Anyone tackled that yet? And they should be 1" speakers.

What's the factory system in your model? Here is the 2014 Taurus with small pics that enlarge when you click on them. There is one of the pillar removed here--

https://www.crutchfield.com/Car/outfitmycar/mycar.aspx

Those should be similar in design across all models as far as physical setup. That looks alot like the pillar in my '14 F150. If you look at those clips, the silver one is very strong and if you mangle it, it costs a surprising amount for a single clip. Been there done that. Don't remember if there is an airbag behind it but I wouldn't be surprised if it did. I've been in there (the truck pillar) twice so don't be scared off.

the link takes me to the taurus page I visited but may not for you. If not, use the website to locate your vehicle and all that jazz on their website and you can see what I'm referring to .

These are the factory tweets, about 1”. Not easily changed out due to the bracket. You’ll need to get creative there’s a little bit of room behind.

And the clips you will undoubtedly break and slice your finger on. 43246790a8de99b3c529d922d2400584
And this is the back side of the a pillar where the clip breaks/mounts

The pillars come off easily. Just open the door pull back the rubber strip around the door opening near the front and pull towards the center of the car, NOT STRAIGHT DOWN.
It will give some resistance but eventually it will pop off. There is an airbag back there for the front curtain so be careful. It’s rolled up like a little burrito.

How'd you secure the new tweeter?

Thanks! New there was an airbag somewhere in there. Haven't pulled the cover completely off yet.

I tried to make some speaker pods awhile back and didn’t like how they came out. I used “flocking” to cover it.
And fiberglass resin to stiffen the fleece

I bought a pair of pillars from a scrapyard and recovered them in a micro suede fabric. Then used some pvc endcaps wrapped in the same material to hold some jbl mid/tweets.

I was going to make pods in the sail panel on the door but didn’t want to deal with running new wires through the molex plugs in the doors.

There is a factory harness that clips together.
You can cut the harness off the speaker and solder on to the new one or splice off the harness. Not sure if the 13+ wiring is the same.

Front left tweeter
Green/orange +
Grey/orange -

Front right tweeter
Purple/orange +
Yellow/orange -

Ok. My question is does the oem tweeter pop out of the funky shaped bracket or is is supposed to be one piece? I would swap in another to the bracket or rig it in there if needed. These oem setups are a real PITA if you want to go off script and use aftermarket stuff. My second set of oem tweeters in the truck are already starting to crap out after about a year or so.

You can pop out the factory tweeter.
It takes 3 hands but it’s not impossible.

FYI: if you’re lazy like me you can pop out the factory tweeter from the plastic holder and cable tie your aftermarket tweeter at the angle you like. Then you can use masking tape as a form and silicone the whole thing in to both hold it securely and make a baffle. It’s ugly as ****, but nobody will ever know except you.

Yeah I've had to hot glue some tweeters in a mount from the back and all kind of business before. Some aftermarket tweeters are now sold with a small screw and tapped hole in the back of the magnet or included mount, and sometimes with a small metal strap that you can try and make work with a preexisting mount. Many ways to skin this cat.
