Folks, I just replaced both the right, rear brake and signal bulbs (3457). At first, there was no problem. The next time (and several times since) the signal clicked quickly and the green arrow in the dash did not light up. I found that if I hold the signal arm up, just before it snaps into place, the signal works properly. Eventually, the signal will work right if I snap it to the up position, but mostly it does not and I have to hold it to work properly.

Any ideas?

sounds like you already found the problem :D
what you are describing is a faulty connection (works when it wants, or if you fiddle with it)

now you just have to tear into the steering column. either the switch contacts need to be cleaned, or the multifunction switch (turn signal, high/low beam, wipers/washers) needs to be replaced

OK...that sure doesn't sound easy. Is there a place, which describes how to do that?

i dont know if there is a write-up online... but I do know that the factory service manual covers it. thumbs_u

The multifunction switch in the SHO is identicle to the ones in the regular taurus and mercury sable... hint, hint (junkyard) wink

This is not something I would replace with a j/y part. They are not that expensive and the hassle is a bit to be putting in a part that may fail again in a week. IMHO

To change the MFS

Disconnect the battery and turn key to run position. Using a small allen wrench push up in the hole under the cylinder that is not a screw hole. Release pressure of the allen wrench and pull out the cyliner with key.

Remove three screws that keep the steering column cover on.

Remove the MFS held in with two torx screws.

Ford part number F4SZ 13K359AB. When I purchased mine a few months ago, it was less than $40.
