Hey guys. Quick question about altering a wastegate setting. First off, here's what I'm working with -Garrett/International C91 series used on the early Ford IDI 6.9/7.3 Turbo diesel engines. It has an internal wastegate with an unknown boost setting and I can only assume that it is higher than the ~5 psi I'm looking for. So here's my question, can I simply purchase a wastegate with a lower psi set spring and adapt it? I want to keep the internal wastegate on it for packaging and cost. Any ideas? Thanks.

Here's the turbocharger/wastegate.

Cool,

I want to help! I bet you need SOMETHING that I have, and if you don't, I can get it or you don't really need it.

theres universal wastegate actuators, but sometime u need to fab the arm/mounting bracket to make it work with something custom like that, or u can take that one off altogether and hook up an electronic boost controller and control your boost from inside the car which is nice. or get an external wastegate.

^Thanks but I'm going for cost effective. I don't want to run a remote waste gate or spend money on a boost controller when the turbo I'm using has a compapact wastegate on it. I need to know if I can change out the spring or use a wastegate with a different setting. Is this doable?

As long as the WG actuator is the same, ie same movement, same length, etc, you shouldn't have a problem. The turbo will not know the difference. I suppose the biggie here, is trying to find a WGA that fits your needs.

Yes, I suppose I'd have to find an OE type WG that is set around 5 psi.

Nick,

The waste gates off of the old Chrysler 2.5's were set to 5-6 PSI. That's the type I had on my old buggy (now Dusty's buggy).

Scott at Turbos Direct can probably hook you up with what you need, just take him your old one. One heck of a nice guy; he helped both Dusty and I out numerous times.

Call me for his number; he lives and works at 83rd Ave and Pinnacle peak road.

What tom said. That WGA is probably set to 20psi or something. Any idea of the A/R on that, do you have access to a compressor map?

Tim, size wise it's a Garrett T04(305) with a cold A/R of .70 and Hot of .82. I could not find a compressor map for it. What do you make of those A/R #'s?

Tom, thanks for posting that info. Is the 2.5 the slant 4 turbo that came in all kinds of Chrysler cars? If so, Ecology salvage yard had about 50(literally) of those little suckers in the Dodge section. I think I still have Scott's # and I will probably need it eventually.;).

Eric, you are correct. The turbo is not to increase the rate of acceleration but to accelerate the rate of clutch replacement:p.

Yeah, the problem with that WG, is that you want to LOWER the boost, not raise it. I don't think you can run lower than WG boost with a controller, they are usually meant for the other way around.

As mentioned, I would try to find a factory gate off something else, that's dimensionally similar, and adapt that to your unit. Just make sure your flapper is fully closed and fully open.

Yes, I think I'm going to go get a WG from one of the Chryslers at the yard(or a few) and see if I can modify the bracket and rod to use it on the Garrett.

Thanks guys!
